I didn't feel like it really helped long term but sometimes just 30 seconds of no screaming was a small relief. Not that it really makes a difference now to me but I am curious to know why they aren't to be given together. I believe you but I've tried looking it up and can't find any answers. I guess I just don't know what to google.

HELP!!! : another silent reflux question

    Author: Happy Mom
Subject: another silent reflux question
Posted: 15 May 2012 at 12:41am

Hi again,

Do whatever makes him feel best! :) I agree!

Just today while at my chiropractor I asked her about adjustments helping babies with reflux. She said that if a baby's mid back is out of place, it can definitely cause reflux. She says she has helped many babies. So I'd say that would be a good thing to try.

Your story sounds quite familiar to mine so I can certainly feel for you! Last summer I finally took the time to write down my entire story of what we went through with our children and what we found to help. I wanted to give it to other mothers with crying babies, so I had a very condensed version printed in a small church magazine and have gotten about 80 calls because of it. Now I've decided to try to find other places to share it. I've just been emailing and faxing it out but several weeks ago the company where I buy our probiotic/enzyme supplement from, made my story into a testimonial pdf on their website. So now I can just refer people to that. I still prefer emailing it when I can because I've changed and added a few things since I gave my story to them. Plus when I email it, it doesn't look like an advertisement for the company. But oh well, the story is really still the same. And beings you are on the natural side of things I believe you will definitely find my story of interest. http://www.corehealthproducts.com/testimonial-pdfs/a-mothers-cry.pdf

I wish you the best in finding relief for your baby!!

He squirms, arches his back and crys after a feed or when we stop to burp him, though we have noticed this has improved. I assumed the smaller more frequent meals was more for those who vomit regularly but was told it could also help with silent reflux, but he is such a hungry baby its almost impossible to stop a feed short not to mention heartbreaking knowing he is still hungry.

I think we will continue to feed him as we have been seeing as he seems happier.

Vivian

There is alot of information that I'm sure i will find helpful. As a first time mum it can all be alittle overwhelming especially when everyone tells you something different.

I know formula may not be enough, though I'd rather introduce one thing at a time so I know what works and what doesnt. We are one week on the formula and have noticed he doesnt arch his back and cry out as much after a feed, and although we can hear him regurgated (doesnt really spit up as he has silent reflux, will vomit if he his pushing to poop straight after a feed lol)

I am also a big believer in the natural side of things and don't really want him on meds if we can avoid it though if his discomfort and pain worses that is our priority no matter what.

besides the formula we give him gripe water after every second feed this seems to help him feel more comfortable as he also has wind.

We keep him upright for 20-30min after every feed either in our laps, holding him while walking around or in his swing which is what he is sleeping in as he wont lie on his back we are looking into purchasing a wedge pillow for his cradle.

the smaller frequent feeds kept coming up in everything we'd read though as i said seems impossible with a hungry baby plus its time consuming as it is feeding him slowly, burping him regularly then keeping up right for 30min, seems we'd only have another 30min before feeding him again if we were to feed more regularly.

I am considering seeing a naturopath as one helped me fall pregnant, and maybe a chiropractor as i've heard they can be very helpful.

I hope he grows out of it soon. Sorry for the lengthy reply. Any additional advise would be great though once again thank you so much for the information and glad to hear your little jonah is cured

Vivian

I tried an elimination diet before but I'm worried I didn't give it enough of a chance to take effect. We also thought we solved the problem when I regulated my milk supply (had OALD/OS) and stopped being strict. It's hard to go back on the diet when everyone is telling you that's not the problem. The congestion is a newer symptom (about 1 month) that makes me revisit the idea. Glad to know we should still be working to treat his reflux besides just diet while I try to get those proteins out of my system!

    Author: KsMom
Subject: Med ?s: Seeing Dr Tomorrow
Posted: 14 May 2012 at 6:32pm

Yes of course!

DS has been on 1ml Zantac 2x per day for 2 months; we were told we could not increase the dose. When we just went the doctor said we could increase to a max dose of 1 ml 3x per day (we were already doing that anyways) and to come back in 2 weeks. We knew it wouldn't work and I fought to go straight to the PPI.

After hassling me about why I thought he had reflux anyways (she diagnosed it originally, and he has clear symptoms-serious sleep issues, bad breath/smelly hands, wet hiccups, discomfort on back, coughing, congestion, audible swallowing, "chewing" on saliva)she finally agreed to prevacid. When I asked about Prilosec or one of the other options due to our insurance not covering Prevacid and there being supply issues with it, she refused to prescribe anything else. She said they don't use those on infants and they can't be compounded (which is incorrect).

Not surprisingly we had issues finding a pharmacy that stocked prevacid, and then had to find a pharmacy that would compound it for us. Finally we found one and decided we'd start the prevacid while we waited to get in with a GI that might be more open. After waiting 2 days and then an hour and half in the pharmacy, we finally ended up with our compounded prevacid- instead of what we'd discussed, it was compounded in xantham gum and dosed at 2.5ml once a day (15mg).

From the information I've learned here and from other reading, I'm worried this won't help anything. We decided to start it just in case while we wait for our next appointment. Luckily we were able to get an earlier appointment with a GI at the children's hospital if we drive to a farther away location- but i'd drive to Timbuktu to get him some relief!

I should also add she completely dismissed the possibility of MSPI or other causes of his symptoms, which is disheartening because he shows more stomach upset than just reflux alone that I'm not sure the PPI will help.

Fingers crossed the new GI is more helpful or at least more open to listening. Until then, we're down to Zantac 2x/day (hard to get the 3rd time in with the spacing with the PPI) and the Prevacid at night, along with gripe water and colic tabs. Not sure those last ones help much but it makes us feel like we're trying...
