Hi I am going to give a little back ground info before my question so maybe I will make some since.
Landon has had 4 ear infections in the past 5 months. The 1st one we treated with Amoxil and it worked fine. A couple of weeks later he had another infection Amoxil didn't work at all so we tried Omnicef (sp) and it worked great. About a month later we were on #3 tried Amoxil didn't help at all again so we tried Omnicef again didn't do much so they gave him 2 shots of Rocephin and then we finnished the Omnicef and that worked. Now we are dealing with #4, We skipped the Amoxil this time and went for the Omnicef, it did nothing so we did the shots again and are now finnishing with Omnicef and he is getting better. Now to the question, and bless you if you have made it this far.
The bottle of Omnicef said "donot take with in 2 hours of an acid reducer" I called the ped. they said Prevacid is not an acid reducer it's a PPI. OK I knew that, but it still reduces the amount of acid he has in him, Right? So I still wait the 2 hours just to be safe cause I don't think the peds office really knew what they were talking about. BUT could the Prevacid, by doing it's job, make the Antibiotic not work as well?
We are being sent to the ENT and I want to be well informed.
Any insight would be great thanks.
Oh and he NEVER had an ear infection until he was a year old and was on the Prevacid already.
Crystal,
Mommy to Landon, 31weeker, 58day NICU stay, Poor Feeder,

I'm a pharmacist, so maybe I could help a little:

The Prevacid shouldn't affect the Omnicef, so it is OK if they are dosed around the same time.   The "acid reducers" they refer to (and they probably shouldn't have used such a broad term) are any antacids containing magnesium or aluminum (like Mylanta, for example).  Magnesium and aluminum can greatly reduce the absorption of the Omnicef, but Prevacid it just fine.

On a different note, what foods is Landon eating?  Recurring ear infections are very common in children who are allergic or intolerant to casein (a milk protein).  Is he on cow's milk or on a formula?  There are also many "hidden" sources of milk like most breads and baked goods, margarine, chocolate, etc.  If he is getting milk in any form, it might be worth doing a casein-free trial to see if the ear infections stop.

Hope this helps a bit!

Landon is on Soy, Silk, he does eat breads though, I never knew milk could cause ear infections, I am thinking of getting some allergy testing done, can they test for the casein?

There are basically 2 different types of food allergies.  The common type that most of us are familiar with cause symptoms of rash, hives, swelling, breathing difficulties, etc.  This type of allergy is caused by IgE (immunoglobulin E) in the body.  This is the type of allergy that is being tested for in the common skin prick or scratch test.

The other type of allergy is less obvious, and the symptoms can appear many hours (even days) after exposure.  This type of allergy (or sometimes referred to as an intolerance) is usually caused by IgG (immunoglobulin G) in the body.  IgG allergies have many different symptoms, and their symptoms can vary from person to person.  Common symptoms include nasal congestion, wheezing or asthma type symptoms, congestion in the ears often leading to recurrent ear infections, and eczema.  In some children, IgG allergies can cause brain inflammation resulting in behavioural issues resembling ADHD and autism.  Most allergists do NOT test for IgG allergies, and aren't even aware of this type of allergy.

It is not uncommon for a child to undergo allergy testing (which is 99.9% of the time IgE testing) and have the result show no allergy to milk, casein, soy or gluten.  However, when these foods are eliminated from their diet, they then have improvement of symptoms (like less ear infections, or clearing of eczema).  The reason for this would be that the allergy is an IgG allergy, not IgE, so it didn't show up on the test.  Often it is easiest to do a trial of removing the suspected food from the diet to see if the symptoms improve.

Another note, soy protein is very similar to the milk protein casein, and many children have IgG reactions to both.  Did your son's ear infections seem to start around the time he started soy or when he started eating solids foods containing milk on a regular basis?  If so, it might be worthwhile doing a milk/soy free trial to see if they improve.

Sorry for the long rant!!  But I hope some of this info is helpful.
