My daughter was a great sleeper, even in the midst of her reflux mess. She would go down no problem.

Benjamin, on the other hand, has always had trouble. When he reflux would flare, his sleep would be the first to be affected.

He is also the slowest and crankiest teether ever. He didn't cut teeth until 10 months, so he is just now getting his eye teeth.. all four at the same time.. They have all just barely come through the gums, but that has taken almost two weeks, and he is still a mess.

To my question. He has had the hardest time settling down for his naps and for bedtime. I usually rock him to sleep for his naps. Takes about 5 minutes.. no problem. Not anymore. He can't get comfortable, so I just put him in his crib. He'll fuss for a minute but then will either talk to himself in there for the entire time of his nap (never sleeping) or will finally fall asleep after about an hour or so of talking. Nightime is like this too. He will be in bed by about 7:45, but won't fall asleep until an hour later. this happens even on days when he won't nap, so I know he is exhausted.

I guess I'm trying to figure out if this is caused by the teething or by something else.. like reflux? too early/late nap/bedtimes, etc.

Any ideas?

I can't speak about whether it's being caused by reflux, but I can tell you that this happens w/ my 2yo every few mths. He'll take forever to go to sleep for naps & nighttime. We just maintain routine (same nap & bedtimes) & it stops usually within 1-3 wks. I think it can have something to do w/ teething (he also didn't get any teeth until 9.5mo so we were late in the game w/ teething).

I was always kind of against putting toys/books in the crib (w/ fear he wouldn't sleep @ all), but this most recent time his sleep was interrupted (I think he's working on 2yr molars) we put 2 books (of his choice) in @ nap & nighttime. I figure: if he's tossing & turning (for whatever reason) then why not help him settle down... I hate tossing & turning!

Also, when we suspect teething we usually give some teething tablets before nap/nighttime... if I really suspect it then Motrin.

Oh, I will join you in your eye teeth misery!!--I will bet it's the teething.

Evie doesn't have sleep issues, but since the eye teeth, she has been OVER sleeping. It's like she's sick. She took 2 - 2hr naps today. She's never had that before. And this has been going on for over a week now. I think all previous teething symptoms go out the window for these eye teeth!

Oh, Katie.. I'll trade you kids... I would much rather have more sleep than less!

Naomi, I bet it is sleep too. Cooper I think is working on the bottom eye teeth right now, however I can't actually see them yet... just tons of drool and poor sleep. He is taking shorter naps (not cranky when he wakes just waking early) and he is waking earlier than usual in the a.m. (the last 4 days) I actually took him to the doc yesterday b/c I was "hoping" it was an ear infection (at least I could treat that) but no nothing seems to be wrong. So I bet it is those darn eye teeth... geez lets just get those buggers in and get some sleep. I would kill to have Evie right now... Katie I am so jealous.

Ari is teething, too.

(he's a non-refluxer) & he's waking up in the middle of the night

. We've been giving motrin, but if you're desperate, try some benedryl- the excess saliva in the teething drool has histimines & benedryl is an anti-histimine...ann marie clued me in to this long ago

. I also rub a drop on his gums & it seems to help

I'd forgotten about the Benedryl trick. I may try that one tomorrow before naptime. He went down fairly well at bedtime tonight - with Tylenol.

We head to the beach on Sunday for a few days, and I really hope that this mess is over by then. Kinda doubt it, but here's hoping!

You are not alone!

Landen is a slow painful teether too and the first thing affected is his sleep. And oh my goodness is he cranky during the day!

I remembered the Benadryl trick and he goes down fairly easy that way. I get some on my finger and rub it on his gums (he is getting all 4 eye teeth too) so far- these eye teeth are proving to be the worst!!

also, we usually always keep a sippy of water in his crib and he's been chewing on the spout during the night to I guess relieve the pain b/c the spout is all chewed up on them, that is how we know his restlessness and waking is from teething. he has also been chewing on his blankies!

landen usually sleeps through the night but lately he's been waking up and i know it's from pain. i've just been giving more tylenol (if it's been at least 4 hrs since the last dose) and finding his sippy in his crib and letting him have some water and patting him back down until he falls back to sleep. i can't wait til this is over!

Whoaaaa...let me clarify. I ONLY have a sleeping baby b/c she spends her time between naps in a constant tantruming, whining, crying, hitting state. I was just trying to say that sleep gets out of whack during teething. Trust me, we're still miserable!!

Okay Katie,.. I don't want Evie if she is that cranky. For your sake I hope she gets those teeth in soon... Teething is such a PITA!!!
