Am I being selfish for wanting to continue nursing Evan despite his pain & blood in stools?  Everyone (well, not everyone) is so quick to say: "Why don't you just put him on formula?" & it's made me stop & think... am I totally crazy & insane & not seeing the big picture here?

The reasons I don't want to throw in the towel right now (besides that fact that I simply want to bf him as long as possible) is twofold.  One: it may not be anything in my diet & then I would have weaned for no reason.  Two: nursing is the one thing that always soothes him despite reflux &/or tummy pain.

Please just tell me if I'm being selfish in my decisions.

You're not selfish at all in your feeling to want to breastfeed.  How far into TED are you?  Have you started to add things back into your diet to see if there is a correlation?

Don't feel pressured from other people to do what THEY think is best.  It is your decision and something you have to decide for yourself!  You'll find that many babies really struggle with formulas as well so you might be just as bad off if you have to go that route!

Laura posted an interesting thread yesterday about an enzyme the mom takes to help break her food down for the baby.  See if you can find that.  It might be something worth trying!

Good luck!

Today was Day 12 of TED.  I'm still on turkey, squash/zuch, rice, sweet pot, white pot & pears.  Also sea salt, pepper, canola & olive oil, cinammon, sugar & brown sugar.

I'm very interested in the enzymes.  I will take the info to our Ped GI appt on Tuesday!

Ok, so I've ordered the OTC pancrease enzymes.  Probably won't be here until Tues or Wed. though.  Will discuss w/ Ped GI on Tues.

The CaraCream arrives this afternoon (David Stock sent me the UPS tracking info).

I ordered an IgG allergy testing kit from Great Plains Lab.  Again, will discuss w/ Ped GI on Tues.

You are not selfish at all... I felt the same way...despite all hte pain McKenzie was in she LOVED to nurse...it was the only way I could calm her down sometimes.  Until you can figure out what is going on, I would keep doing what you want and don't worry about what other people say!

Ok so this is a stretch and I am not telling you to do this, but my friend that I told you about who had to IgG test done...her baby was reacting to Canola...I know it is weird, but since you can just use olive oil as your only oil, maybe try that...or you know just wait until you get the results back from your IgG if you get that done...I just thought I would pass that along. :-)

I haven't had canola oil (or something cooked in it) or brown sugar since Monday or Tuesday...

Who knows @ this point.

I'm going to start the CaraCream today (that way he doesn't have to do the pureed pears) & see if that makes a difference.  Then, I will cut out rice starting Sunday & see if we see any results before Ped GI appt Tues afternoon.

You are Definitely(!) not being selfish!  Hopefully, those who are suggesting that you switch to formula are just trying to offer helpful(?) ideas.  We supplemented with formula eventually, but I continued nursing for 25 months due to the same reasons you mentioned.  I could see that nursing brought him comfort through his pain that a bottle never could.

I've looked up a couple of quotes from "Colic Solved" by Dr. Bryan Vartabedian that might be of help/support to you.

~ About how long it takes to see results from your changed diet:  "Remember that it will take a couple of days to clear your breast milk of offending proteins and up to 3 weeks for your baby's intestinal tract to heal, so be patient and don't expect overnight changes."  pg. 146

~ About the benefit of breastmilk for a baby with reflux: "Making the change to bottle-feeding is often the worst thing that a desperate mother can do, because breast milk is absolutely the best nutritional substrate for the infant with reflux.  Despite the fact that the formula manufacturers have sought reflux solutions, nothing they produce matches the qualities of breast milk as far as helping the baby with reflux: Breast milk empties very efficiently from the stomach, compared with formula, and impaired stomach emptying is one of the major factors contributing to reflux in infancy." pg. 144

I hope that the CaraCream and the enzymes help you out.  Let me know how your ped GI visit goes (and who you get to see...).  Is the ped GI visit in your area or up in mine?  If you are up here, maybe we could get together for a few minutes before or after your appointment.  Just a thought...

Dianne,

Thank you for the quotes.  I really liked Dr. Vartabedian's way of thinking in that interview from the link you sent (love Wondertime as well, btw).  I'm a huge "reader" lol so I think I will go get that book tonight or sometime this weekend.

Ped GI appt is in your area... our ped insisted we only see Wilsey.  It's @ 1:15pm so let me know if it works for you or not.  I can't meet before b/c I have a mommy & me class w/ my 2yo that goes until noon (then dh & I will drive up there w/ just Evan- Brodie will be w/ sitter).  But maybe after.
