Topic: Teething? Help- no sleep!

Hi Everyone,

Just when I thought I had things under control, things fall apart. My LO was doing great for a while but lately he is more fussy and irritable and can't stay asleep for longer than 30 minutes. Last night he was pretty much up all night. He has been biting/gnawing on everything and I really suspect that he is teething. My daughter got two teeth before she was 4 months old so I know it is possible but she was not bothered. Could his not sleeping be due to teething and how do I really know if it is discomfort from the reflux or teething? This is so frustrating b/c I never know what is reflux related or something else. I guess I am just looking to know if others LO's sleep was sooo affected when they were teething???

Well the theory on here ;) ..is that teething can aggrivate reflux. for some reason some of us have seen our Lo's reflux get worse while they are teething. It could be the teething alone or the reflux and the teething. Is he spitting up more?

I would give some tylenol.. and maybe some mylanta cherry supreme for the reflux.

YES YES and YES! My dd was/is a HORRIBLE teether and her sleep is definitely affected. She's more irritable and unhappy all around. I would do tylenol/motrin along with some mylanta for the reflux. HUGS! I hope EVERY tooth isn't this miserable!

Well, he does seem to be spitting up more today. I gave Tylenol which did nothing then a friend said to try Motrin. I gave Motrin, laid him down in his crib and he put himself to sleep (on his back)--a first for him. Do you think this means he is more than likely teething since the Mortin seems to have done something?

Thanks for the hugs. If every tooth is this bad-I won't have any hair left!

I would do the motrin over the tylenol as it seems to work better and it lasts longer. Another thing you can do that many of us forget about is a little bit of liquid benadryl on their gums... just rub it on. I think the reason the motrin works better is b/c it is an antiinflammatory and therefore it helps with the pain and swelling where as the tylenol just helps with the pain. Also I would do the mylanta for the reflux as well.

Oh yes, we hate teething around here, and Ben is the slowest teether, ever. He is a cranky mess and his sleep is ALWAYS affected. Actually, that's usually how we can tell a new tooth is coming.

All the above suggestions are good ones. They do help.

I am def. going to stick with the Motrin since that seems to have helped somewhat. So, how often would you give Motrin and not worry about it causing any damage? He is about 2 weeks away from 4 months.

You can give motrin every 6-8hrs without harm. If you alternate tylenol and motrin you can give every 4hrs. (ie. tylenol then 4hrs later motrin, then 4hrs later tylenol etc) HTH

UPDATE:

Last night I gave a dose of Motrin at 11 pm-but it didn't help. He was up 7 times-every hour on the hour. It was like clock-work-unbelievable. Prior to this he was only waking once sometimes two times. What is going on??? Could this really be teething causing such disruption in his sleep. Also, I put him to sleep on his tummy and every time he woke, he was on his back. How should I handle this? He obviously does not need to be fed every hour. Should I do CIO or would I be a cruel momma? Any advice greatly appreciated!

Maybe the Motrin hurts his tummy. Landen can't take it, it's too hard on his stomach (no suprise there, everything is-lol) I hope tonight is better. Teething is the pits!
