Jackson got ear tubes yesterday and he had his adenoids removed. The doctor said that his adenoids were enormous and that his ear was impacted with a thick, glue like fluid. He called it glue ear.

My question is- Jackson is 13 months old. The doc said that he was not hearing very well at all before. He is certainly noisier since the tubes yesterday. From your experiences, how long should it take for his speech to pick up? He refers to everything as "da." I am anxiously awaiting his first word! How long did it take your babies after tubes?

Danika has her 1st set of tubes at 18months and I noticed a difference right away.  Then in April Ashlynn had her 1st set and Danika had her 2nd tubes plus adenoids removed.  Since that Danika sleeps through the night and she is a talker.!   When  I took Danika to the Dr after her first set of tubes ,she passsed the hearing test with flying colors.  The hearing test right before the tubes she did not do so hot, she could hardly hear anything and which in turn I stared to cry!.  But both girls have done great with their tubes

Just today (the day after tubes), Jackson is making lower pitched, very loud sounds. Lots of babbles. No real words yet, but he is definitely having fun with his voice! He is also not screaming when I lay him down to change his diaper. Maybe the fluid was creating uncomfortable pressure when he was laying down.

Landen started babbling really loud the day OF and after his surgery. The nurse told me b/c it was the first time he didn't have fluid on his ears for a long time. He was very loud! After that he would mimick sounds we made and started forming words (right away) and a month after his surgery he said his first phrase "Don't touch it". I told him that when he tried to touch the front of a hot oven and he repeated it back. I guess what I'm saying is, you'll notice improvements right away.

Hope he recovers fast :)

How old was Landen, Jill? Jackson is not repeating or mimicking just yet. I hope that comes soon!

No consistent words yet, but after 3 days of tubes, here is what has happened:

1) He seems to be saying keys sometimes (not enough to be sure)
2) He is imitating the sounds that cows, dogs, birds and lions make!!! This is a huge change for him!
3) He is understanding more of what I say

No definite words yet, but pretty good for 3 days! The animal sounds is perhaps the most dramatic change. He NEVER would have done that before tubes!

Jedd was completely caught up and discharged from speech therapy within 6 omnths of gettign  his ear tubes. they were the BEST thing we could have done for his speech.

You can see is he qualifies for early intervension and get some speech for him. It did wonders for Jedd.

He did qualify for EI and we are already set up for speech. He has not had any speech therapy since the tubes. Did Jedd still point when he had fluid in his ears? Jackson will NOT point! I have tried a billion times to shape his hand and he just won't do it. He reaches to show me things and follows my point, but will not do it himself.
