When my baby is arching and crying, I usually hold her and try to comfort her. Is this the best thing to do?

Yep. Hold her close and give her as much love as she needs. Your smell and your soft voice, your warmth, your heartbeat are all things that she needs (of course if she needs meds etc then give those as well

try some mylanta cherry supreme! a 1ml syringe full- squirt it in alongside inside of cheek to calm baby down
look for it everywhere, lol, its sometimes hard to find- it's the one variety of mylanta w/o any aluminum
you can give up to 5mls over a 24hr period- if you see loose stools, back off a bit-very safe-even for newborns (it's the adult kind- there is no kiddo kind)
