![]() Topic: Zantac/Reglan vs. PPI ?????Posted: 21 October 2009 at 3:36pm |
|
My daughter is on Zantac and Reglan. Could someone please provide
insight as to why our doctor would place her on these two drugs rather
than a PPI......and does anyone have information on Reglan they'd like
to share. I know it is controversial but our doctor assured us, it is
safe, as long as she shows no signs of an allergic reaction.

I think it's generally understood that MANY doctors are clueless about the research regarding infants and PPIs (such as at www.marci-kids.com) They are uneducated about the benefits of PPIs and proper dosing. Like Laura said, I think zantac and reglan are the 'old standard' that they are most familiar and comfortable with...even though they usually aren't the most effective. |

So my daughter has now been on Reglan and Zantac for 6 weeks. Some progress has been made but still tons of peaks and valleys. In other words, I don't feel the benefits to the Reglan are outweighing the risks. We went this week back to the ped GI for a 6 week check up, he wants to leave her on the Reglan, replace Zantac w/Prevacid AND add Erythromycin. Are you kidding me?!? My baby is 5 months old and not even 13 pounds. How much medication can you pump into a tiny baby. Needless to say, I was not satisfied with his "preferred treatment option" and am seeking a 2nd opinion and regardless of what happens there, will be taking my daughter off Reglan.
In addition to the stress of having a sick baby and no real true answers, my husband is completely non-supportive of getting a 2nd opinion or taking her off Reglan. He seems to take everything the dr says at face value and question none of it. ?!? I noticed most members of this site appear to be moms, does anyone share in my frustration of feeling alone on this quest to find a safe, effective treatment for my child?!? |

many, if not most of us, have had to fight the good fight. for ME/us, my husband couldn't stand how miserable our son was (either), so he was right on board w/ finding answers. when I 'found' this site and marci-kids he was right there in the kitchen, opening up capsules and mixing up batches of caracream (this is now called bufferbabies).
tell your husband that this is a DISEASE (GERD the D is for Disease) and you will FIGHT for your baby and that RESEARCH is (just) the start of your fight... |

I will never forget the day I took Ryan in with a diaper full of florescent green mucas and blanket full of vomit with specks of blood. The doctor wouldnt even look at the diaper or the blanket. He told me that we had a healthy thriving baby boy (never mind that he dropped from the 97th percentile in weight to 26 at that point). He said I needed sleep. When we walked out of the office my husband said "That is great news. That has to make you feel so much better." Lets just say he was really lucky that I had the baby in one arm and the diaper bag in the other. I didnt talk to him for the rest of the day. The next day I got Ryan into the GI, he took one look at the diaper and told me that he was lactose intollerant. I have never taken my DH to the doctor with me again. Each time I have taken him to the ER for fluids he thought I was crazy and that he was not deydrated. Each time he was and had to get IVs. He doesn't question me anymore. YOU are the mother. God gave you the gutt instincts. Trust them, follow them and take action when you feel like you need to. No one knows your baby better than you. Get the 2nd opinion. There is nothing at all wrong with that. Remember that a doctor is just another person with an opinon. You are free to take, leave it, or get another opinion. Stay strong!!

So ladies I have to tell you. Fortunately, I was able to get my daughter in to another ped GI for a 2nd opinion last Friday. It is amazing the vast difference in physician style and philosophy. This doctor's recommended method of treatment is more in line with what I am most comfortable with, NO REGLAN. Therefore we are now phasing Reglan out, sticking with Zantac and switching to a hypoallergenic formula. So far, so good. Needless to say, we are changing doctors.
One very important thing I learned last week....don't ever let anyone, anyone, cause you to question your mother's intuition. I knew all along the treatment path we were on was not right for my daughter. My husband called me crazy and told me to stay off the internet but now, he admits he was wrong. Always trust your instinct when it comes to your children! |

I just want to add that I am very glad you are with a new doc. If however they do suggest the E-mycin I would try it... but I don't know why the other doc wanted both the reglan and the E-mycin as they serve the same purpose. So if you find after sometime that e-mycin is needed for delayed gastric emptying it is very safe and effective for most. I would keep in mind that it is an antibiotic so if you go that route please please please put your little girl on probiotics to help keep her gut flora in balance. I am lucky on the husband front as I am married to a pharmacist and I myself work in healthcare so we are "better able" to gauge what docs tell us and luckily we haven't met any that have made unrealistic recommendations or that have really questioned us. Our ped did take 8wks to diagnose the reflux but it hadn't dawned on me either I just knew something was wrong but didn't know what... but once we figured it out together she has been the best most supportive doc imaginable.
Sorry for the ramble. Good Luck and glad you have found someone you feel comfortable with. |

Hi! My daughter has been suffering with reflux for 3+ months now. Her general pediatrician also put her on the combination of Zantac & Reglan. It worked like a charm for about 3 weeks and then just stopped working, and doesn't work at all now. I'm hoping you have better luck with it!! I didn't see any side effects with her, except that with the Reglan, it causes stomach cramps and tightening & I did notice that a little with her.
Good Luck! :)
