![]() Topic: Any Little One on 30+mg Prevacid/day??Posted: 12 November 2009 at 10:21am |

Hi All!
We're still trying to get our little guy comfy all, or most, of the day. He's currently on 30mg Prevacid/day, 1 ml Carafate 2x/day, and Neocate thickened with rice cereal. We were doing 15mg 2x/day, but he was getting really uncomfy, arching/crunching, pushing bottle away around 2-3 in the afternoon. Once he'd get his 2nd dose (around 4:30 to 5), he'd be ok through bedtime. He then started waking again around 2-3, seemingly from pain--sometimes he would eat, but usually I could pick him up & rock him, get him upright for a while and he'd get back to sleep eventually. For the last 3 days we've tried splitting the prevacid into 3 approx. 10mg doses (I estimate 2/3 of the solutab & cut with pill cutter)--this is what we did with Dagney and it worked for her--and under our Pedi's direction also upped the thickening to 2 tsp/ounce (Dagney was on 1 Tablespoon/ounce). Well, the first day he slept for 3 hours in the morning (after a rough day before though), but yesterday and today he just seems like he's uncomfy (arching/crunching) all day long except for the bottles immediately following the Prevacid. I don't want him to be uncomfy at all, but if it's a matter of being uncomfy for a few hours in the afternoon on 2 doses or uncomfy all day long on 3 doses, I'd go back to hte 2 doses!
This makes me think that maybe he needs a higher dose?? I seem to remember someone saying they had their LO on 45mg/day. Is this the case? Has anyone done that, or any increment over 30mg/day? Maybe we could do 15mg in am, 7.5 around noon, then 15 at bedtime? I don't know if our PEdi would agree to it, he had said if this doesnt work, then the GI would likely have to do biopsies/endoscopy. I know the GI wouldnt agree to it, she never liked Dagney and doesn't like Harry on the 30mg/day as it is... (the Pedi is the one that upped both kids to that). OR, does anyone have any other suggestions? I've also tried Mylanta mid-day, or possibly Axid?? Any help is appreicated!!
Speaking of Mylanta, which is better for them Mylanta or Maalox? I've always used the plain non-flavored Mylanta, but I know many of you like the Cherry Supreme (I saw Amy's post on it!) because of alumnium in them...
Better go--little guy is getting cranky, and this computer is about to crash!!
Thanks in advance!

Hi!
We put Evan on 45 mg/day for a short time around 10-11 mths old. Our general ped prescribed it (well, he always writes our Prevacid scripts as our ped GI doesn't agree w/ anything above 15mg/day... 22.5mg/day in some cases. He wanted to do a pH probe + another scope when we were insisting he stay on 30mg. Our general ped didn't agree w/ the testing since the dosage & Evan's pain was under control, etc.). The only thing was that insurance didn't cover anything above 30mg/day so that was tricky. He was only on that higher dose for about 2 mths... then back to 30mg/day. The reason I felt ok upping his dose was b/c the dosing calculator on marci-kids said it was the upper range dose for his age (10mths old) & weight (around 17-18lbs). When we upped the dose we did 15mg around 8am & 30mg around 4pm. Hope that helps! Before we upped the dose we were doing 15mg in a.m., Axid around noon (before his afternoon nap) & 15mg around 4/5pm. We've always used Mylanta Cherry Supreme... Evan's never fought it- he actually likes the taste, etc. Keep us updated! |

Denise since Harry is so young... I might try like Erin said and do the 15mg in the a.m. and p.m. and put some Axid in during the middle of the day and then again middle of the night if he needs it..Cooper loves the cherry mylanta Supreme... it tastes yummy and we used it for diaper rash too as I think someone else posted elsewhere... works great for that also.
