    Posted: 12 December 2009 at 1:11pm
Hi there.. hoping someone can shed some insight for me. My son (3 mons) has reflux, diagnosed at about 9 weeks. We noticed something was off right away but our ped brushed it off as "just colic". Luckily we were seen in the ER and referred to another ped who diagnosed him. Since then we have tried Zantac (did NOTHING) and have moved on to prevacid fast tab (he gets about 12 mg out of the 15 mg tab) and recently we have added domperidone 1 and 1/2 tsp x3 daily.
My question is how long do infants generally stay on these meds, are there side effects that might last long term, is it safe for infants to be on long term?? I am not finding this info and our ped is not really into talking.. he just prescribes which is frustrating. Also, because of the growth, shouldn't the doses be increased? My dr continues to say no....
My son seems to be very big for 3 months (almost 16 pds and 26 inches long!) I understand the dom can make infants hungry... he is on a 4 hour eating schedule during the day and will give me at least 1 stretch of 5 hours at night, occasionally 6 hours...i am concerned he is gaining too quickly.
He seems to be doing better, he still vomits if he is moved at all after eating (God forbid put on his back!!) He seems to not be in so much pain which is fabulous.... i am just wondering about a future plan for this regarding the meds... anyone have any insight... ?? thanks in advance!

hi & welcomeSmile!

you've found a great place!

the key to all of this is RESEARCH and, of course, support!

I have a LOT TO SAY! and most of it is here:

Groupie Intro: http://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=853

yes the meds are weight sensitive, so yes the dose needs to be increased as he  gains weight...

unfortunately the majority of drs & pharmacists don't know...babies metabolisms' are much faster than adults, so the drugs work differently with them...

please visit

http://www.marci-kids.com/dosing.html as they are w/ the U of Missouri & are at the forefront of research of PPIs and infants...
and, also please review Prevacid 101, last post on the page:

I know nothing about domperidone, I'm sorry, you can do a search though:
upper right-hand corner of the screen/page

search

all forums

keyword:domperidone

from right side, choose 6 months and OLDER from drop-down menu

(the default is 6 months & newer) - this way you can learn from all the past posters who might not be here anymore bcse their babies are much better

AND:

My response- how long does this last? As a 1rst question:

http://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=3541&PN=1&TPN=1

so glad you found us!

~laura

ps: when you get a moment, please go to the upper right-hand corner of this screen and click on 'settings' and from there you can edit your signature and let us know how old baby is, what formula or breastfeeding,  MSPI or not, what meds and what doses and form of meds and how you're administering-thanks!

Thanks so much for the info Laura... yesterday and today i have done quite a bit of research... i can't really find much on the domperidone and have come to the conclusion that this is effecting our nights with him as he seems to be hungrier than before and going shorter stretches.
By no means do i think he has a HORRIBLE case of reflux but he was in a lot of pain before and SCREAMING alot.. i have seen improvement but i question whether we would see further gains, coming off the domperidone and increasing the does of prevacid instead. Our pead doesn't really give us info and isn't really open to hearing the dose might need to be adjusted...
DOES ANYONE ELSE AGREE WITH MY THOUGHTS ON dropping the domperidone and increasing the times/day of prevacid... it appears he is WAY under dosed (12mg x1 daily?!?! or the fastab)
Any thoughts?? thanks in advance!

you're the mama!  trust your instincts!
my baby was prescribed reglan and after reading/learning about it here we decided to stop it.
you can always add it back in after stopping it.
I would increase the prevacid...
