Hi All.  I cried when I found this forum and read so many stories of moms and babies struggling with extreme bottle aversion and poor feeding issues like my son.  He's 8 months old and we have been at war with feeding since he was about 4 months.  I have fed him thru a syringe exclusively for the last 2 months b/c he flat out REFUSED his bottle (can't even pry his mouth open).  Finally at the urge of our request to see a specialist b/c my pediatrician told me for MONTHS that it's ok he hates his bottle b/c he's "smart" and prefers food. GI doc diagnosed him of mild milk allergy and milk allergy induced reflux.  He's been on 15 mg of prevacid solutab (once a day) and switched form Similac Advance to Gerber's Gentle-Plus (something about Whey protein being tolerated better than casein proteins).  Well he's been on the new regimen for 2 weeks and he did 10000x better.  He's actually eating from the bottle vs the syringe which is already a miracle.  He seems to be spitting up more now (never projective) but he spits up just enough in his mouth and then swallows it right back w/o any signs of pain of discomfort.  He will only eat if I rock him around the house using every distraction possible, touching light switches, touching art work, playing with the blinds, ANYTHING...my arms are so sore beyond words b/c he's so heavy (21 lbs) but I will find a way to keep feed him this way if it gets him to eat his bottle.  However, the last 2 days he's regressed back to his old ways.  Not really interested in the bottle.  I can't use the syringe b/c the doctor said no more syringes and no more forced feedings.  So I'm thinking should I up his prevacid to 30mg?  I doubt he will increase the dose.  But it's OTC and according to MARCI you can't really "overdose" with PPI.  Does my story sound similar to anyone?  I'm just hoping the increased dose will help.  Also I think switching to Alimentum now seems a little late b/c he's old enough to KNOW that it tastes like complete junk.

Your story is exactly like ours.  Sorry but I have to keep this quick right now, just wanted to respond.  My dd stopped eating willingly from breast or bottle at around 2 months old.  After that, feeding was much like you describe, except for us, it had to be rocked to sleep in a dark room, and then she would sleep feed 1 or 2 ounces but again with difficulty.  This was not a solution, and just persisted on and on.  Sounds like you have a feeding aversion like we did.  First thing I'd say is that he needs to be on higher dose of prevacid- 30mg would be a good place.  I'd also try it with buffer babies, because otherwise you have to time it around meals- 30 to 60 minutes before meals on an empty stomach and then followed up with the feeding.  You need to get the pain under control before the eating can get better.  In our case, it took a long time after the pain was controlled, we did feeding therapy and then it got better gradually with good reflux relief.  You may need to look at  higher meds, and MSPI diet as well.  The other thing, is to try to delay solids if you can.  I introduced solids somewhere around 5 mos at the request of our GI, saying that maybe she'd do better there.  But the pain was so bad that it developed into an overall feeding aversion.  Really I should have controlled the pain first.    There have been some people who did transition to alimentum or neocate by adding a few drops gradually and then increasing.  we could never do that, as she wouldn't go near it even with one drop.  So, if I were you, I'd try to get the prevacid increased, consider buffer babies (which you can ready about here as a good way to give it).  If you need to syringe feed, as long as it's not force feeding, then you do what you need to do.  Feeding needs to be pleasant, and there were some moms who syringe fed or spoon fed formula when we were going through this.  I never did it, because I didn't want her to associate feeding with the medication syringe that she already hated.  If you need to carry him around while feeding, then definitely invest in a good carrier or sling to free up your arms, otherwise I don't see how you'll keep it up. Beyond that, you can go the route of testing like an endoscopy to check for damage, but I don't know how much that will change.  When he's older and you know the pain is well controlled, then you can get feeding therapy if he needs it for solids and liquids.  Hang in there.  It is hard but you're doing a great job!

Hailey-05/05- My funny little girl. 4 years old, but still my baby.
Past feeding aversion. Now typical eater, off prevacid for 1.5 years!
