Our LO had a biopsy 2 months ago, he ate gluten for 30 days prior.... his Iga was a 1 several months before but now is normal. Only his IGG is mildly low.
When the GI came out of the procedure room after doing the scope, she said it's Celiac...but...when the pathology report came back she said it couldn't confirm it...she then sent us to an immunologist and said she would be interested to hear what he had to say.... he said no allergic reaction, immediate or delayed (has been tested for both) to anything....at all. He said with his immune deficiencies, which he thinks is transient....he thinks all his previous illness might have caused the villi blunting....severe diarrhea for a week, vomiting 15 times one night, multiple ear infections etc. He was on a lot of antibiotics for weeks on end and taking motrin for a couple of months, daily...

Here is what the report said....mild villi blunting and crypt-hyperplasia....other features of celiac are not present.

What do you make of this? We haven't been back to the GI yet, will go in April....

there is no way your GI could have told you it was celiac just by looking at the scope with his naked eye---it has to be looked at on a microscopic level to be able to tell.   celiac won't show any allergic reaction since it is not an allergy, and an intestinal illness could definitely cause some temporary intestinal damage.

last year i had a scope done and they told me i had celiac because i had similar dmage to what you are describing---but only in the duodenal bulb.   since i have 3 girls with celiac, i was already pretty familiar with it---and the terminology they used in the lab report was totally different than what had been used with my girls.   after doing a little research, i discovered that using NSAIDS for a long period of time can cause damage that looks similar to celiac in the duodenal bulb.   i had anothe doc of mine run a TtgIgA and it came back negative.
i had a scope this year and it showed no dmage whatsoever that looked like celiac.
i don't think i would take the celiac diagnosis to heart yet without further testing.  if he doesn't seem to have problems with gluten, i'd leave him on it for now and wait until he is a little older and do some testing again.  Ttg testing isn't accurate under the age of 3---for some reason they don't always produce the Ttg antibodies when they are that young.
it sounds like yur immunologist is a little more on top of things right now than your gi is.

I have been pushing the GI for more testing. We are doing stool cultures and depending on what those say, we will also do some blood work. I am not convinced it is Celiac...He was also on a high does of Zegerid for months, 3 times a day and my "internet education" gives me the gut feeling that his stomach acid was too shut down, it damaged the stomach therefore allowing bacteria etc in...causing the illness's he had...causing him to not absorb nutrients....becoming failure to thrive and with his low immunity he wasn't able to fend the stuff off.... and it all has damaged his stomach. Now I have to see what the GI's thought is on it :)
He was also on motrin for a couple of months becasue he felt so bad all the time.... :)
So...I am pushing for tests..he has been off of the zegerid for about 5 weeks so hopefully his tummy will start to heal and we can just move forward.
