how common is dysphagia [difficulty swallowing] ? DS coughs and gags sometimes chokes with feedings, can reflux do this?anybody here with LO having this problem? internet search brings up mostly neurodevelopmental problems or muscular weakness as the cause of swallowing difficculty and I am starting to worry if something more is going on....DS has reflux and probably MSPI.

My 10 month old daughter has dysphagia. She was in NICU on a
vent for a long period of time. We had a swallow study and it showed that thin liquids would travel towards her airway when she swallowed. We thickened her bottles with ThickIt to a nectar consistency. She had horrible reflux and weight loss so we had a fundoplication for reflux and button. She is much better but still suffers from dysphagia. We are currently working with a speech therapist and occupational therapist to work on her skills eating and taking a bottle. |
