Hi, I have a 2 month old adopted DD.  I'm here because we noticed a little blood in DD's stools.  Our ped switched her to Nutramigen formula b/c she thought it could be a milk protein allergy.  It has now been over a month since we first noticed the blood, and over 3 weeks since we started the Nutramigen and she is still having blood in her stools.  I don't always see it, and when I do it is just a couple of small red streaks.  However, I have taken dirty diapers to the ped during our follow-up appointments and they have all tested positive for blood.  The dr. wants us to try Zantac.  She does spit up a bit, but she is a happy spitter.  She is a happy baby overall, with no other concerns except the blood in her stool.  I am hesitant to try the Zantac b/c it doesn't seem like acid reflux is the issue here.  The dr. thought maybe acid could be irritating her digestive tract, but I just feel like she would be showing some discomfort if that were the case.

Anyway, has anyone ever heard of Zantac helping with blood in stools?  I have just started her on a probiotic supplement (supposed to be animal-product free) as well as L-Glutamine to help heal her digestive tract.  I'm wondering if we need to move on to a formula like Neocate.  It is so upsetting not to know how to help her!

Hi, sorry I haven't updated in a while!  As of right now, DD (4 months old) has been on Neocate for almost 7 weeks.  We had a diaper tested when she had been on it for about 3 weeks, and for the first time, it did NOT test positive for blood.  So we have kept her on the Neocate.  We also started Zantac because of the spitting up.  She rarely ever seemed to be in pain and is still a happy little baby, but I was concerned about aspiration with the amount she was spitting.  The dr. witnessed her spit up 4 times at one appointment, and strongly suggested that we try it.  So she has been on Zantac now for about 4 weeks.  I think it may be helping some; she does still spit up, but it seems to be less. 

She sees the dr. for her 4 month appointment tomorrow, and I will have them test a diaper again.  My questions will be how long should she stay on both the Neocate and the Zantac?  Do we keep her on the Neocate since it seemed to help, or could it be that the Neocate fixed the issue that caused the blood in her stool, so that she could be weaned back to either a soy or back to Nutramigen or Alimentum?

I still have not attempted to contact my insurance company.  I am too chicken.  I'm going have my doctor fill out the sample letter on the Neocate website.  She has encouraged me to contact them, so I know she will cooperate.  Do most people start with a phone call or a letter?  I'm not confident that the representative that answers the phone will be able to help!
