Hi there just introducing myself- my name is susan my daughter is Amelia-she is three mos old & has pretty severe reflux diagnosed when she was 6 weeks old.

We are treating it with Prevacid 15mg (split in 2 doses) daily. It has offered SOME relief but she still refuses feedings daily (arches back screams screeches) often followed by painful spit ups or silent reflux episodes. She costantly smells of stomach acid poor baby-We are really struggling with sleep especially napping during the day (only sleeps 20-40 min naps) she just cant get comfy it breaks my heart. I'm interested in what tricks you all have for sleep? & feeding difficulties
She is strictly breast fed I've pondered if my milk is the prob!? I'm on a gluten free dairy free diet. She sleeps on her side & back on an elevated mattress but gets her best sleep upright on my shoulder or chest- makes it difficult for mommy to sleep. I've tried the rock n play sleeper swing vibrating seat cars eat all with no success- I'm really tired & so is my baby from being sleep deprived.

Ped recommended mylanta supreme but i cannot find it anywhere not even the generic evidently they stopped production for some reason? Anyone else having this prob finding it?

Lastly I should mention she has (had) a tongue tie which was repaired & has thrush of the tongue both which have been ruled out as THE feeding problem.
Thanks for your replies!!!

Oh wow!! You poor things!! I feel SO badly for you! About 5 1/2 years ago I was in your shoes exactly!! Does she have strange poop and lots of gas too?

That is awesome that you are still nursing! For all babies but especially ones with digestive problems, mama milk is best!!! You just have to get your milk to the point where your baby is able to digest it properly. Have you heard of MSPI (Milk/Soy Protein Intolerance)? That is what my children had. I totally admire you for already cutting out gluten and dairy but you might want to try cutting out soy too. I tried a dairy/soy free diet with my boys but just wasn't self disciplined enough and gave up. :(

There are special formulas made for babies that have reflux and food intolerances. These formulas have the proteins extensively broken down in them so that baby's tummy doesn't have to work so hard to digest it. But even on one of these formulas my boys still struggled.

But now I have a 7 month old baby girl that I am still nursing!!! :-) And...eating whatever I want!!! By taking a probiotic/enzyme supplement it creates breast milk that has the proteins extensively broken down in it. My story is long in how I learned about this and why and how it works so I created a blog (see signature) where people can read all about it. :)

I am sure that soon Laura (and maybe others) will soon post too and give you a lot of good ideas and suggestions! She knows a ton about caring for reflux babies.

Hi & welcome!

I have a LOT to say and most of it's here, in a link called 'groupie intro.'
it's looooong but TRULY will help you!
read through it, refer back to it, scroll through it/skim through it. You'll find yourself coming back to it!

As for mylanta, they did stop making it- you need to find a generic/store brand that does not contain aluminum - you can find store brand equivalents try rite-aid, cvs brand, walmart, target, Bartell Drug (West coast), Dollar General: brand name Geri-Care & Geri-Lanta Supreme, meijer, etc- just look for one that does not list aluminum in the ingredients. you can give 1ml up to 5 times a day- it's safe, even for newborns. if you see loose stools back off

you MUST SPACE IT FOUR HOURS FROM THE PREVACID

I also would check baby's prevacid dose...it might be able to be increased?

Prevacid 101:

scroll to the last page of this post, (it's actually also about other PPIs like prilosec, too)

Reasons a breastfeeding mother might think her baby is reacting to something in her milk:

*poop that is not 'normal' mustardy yellow, seedy breastfed baby poop

*mucous in poop; mucous can look like: snot, jelly, cottage cheese, stringy like the inside of a banana

*foul-smelling poop

*stinky, foul-smelling painful gas

*straining and grunting to poop and, when baby finally does poop, it's soft
