My Rett is 4 1/2 months, and we are struggling!
Here are our symtoms:
Silent reflux...rarely spits up
Arching and crying during feeds
FUSSING all day, never seems content or happy
Waking several times a night...naps are never more than 30-45 minutes
Hoarse cry

He has no rash, no blood in stool (been tested), no congestion. His poops were always normal, once in a while we would see mucus, but only once a week maybe.

He is on prevacid 7.5 2xdaily, recently increased from only once daily when it wasnt helping. He has been on this dose for 5 days now. Gi dr said i could try to eliminate dairy/soy, and we are feeding nutramagin in the mean time so we can see results faster. Day 5...still no change...just more spit up since no breast milk...which makes me want to quit and go back to giving him breast milk. Bothe Ped. And GI dr say MSPIis highly unlikely because he has no "allergy" signs, and his symptoms seem upper GI, not lower. So, i am at a loss.

His weight gain is amazing...17lbs at 4months 3weeks.

Any thoughts?

please don't stop breastfeeding if you don't want to!
and, it doesn't sound like mspi- so just focus on your diet and leave the formula out of the equation...

Reasons a breastfeeding mother might think her baby is reacting to something in her milk:

*poop that is not 'normal' mustardy yellow, seedy breastfed baby poop

*mucous in poop; mucous can look like: snot, jelly, cottage cheese, stringy like the inside of a banana

*foul-smelling poop

*stinky, foul-smelling painful gas

*straining and grunting to poop and, when baby finally does poop, it's soft

Thanks for your reply. I have had to pump milk for the last few weeks anyway because he began refusing to.nurse from me. I want the best...and that's breastmilk. But I want him to feel better fast too. The nutramagin is nasty, smelly, and so far has not made a but of difference. People tell me to give it 2 weeks, but I guess I just feel like i should see SOMETHING by now. I just hate the 2 week wait to see if something is going to work. It's misery for him and our family, and then if after 2 weeks it's no better...we're back at square 1...which haunts me at night thinking we may NOT be I'm the right path yet. PLEASE let this new dose of prevacid work!
We also bought tummy care max so that we can give OTC prilosec instead since it's cheaper. I just don't know what dose to use, and my GI clinic is terrible about returning calls!

This nightmare needs to end.

I would also get to la leche league and an international board certified laction consultant
I would also look in to probiotics & digestive enzymes.

try breastfeeding in a warm bath (you in the bath w/ the baby) - sounds weird, but it calms them down...also, babywearing saved us- if you can walk around w/ her close to you and w/ you not wearing very much, she'll smell you and feel close to you and perhaps want to cuddle/nurse...
hang in there!
