My son is 4 weeks old.  He eats every 2-4 hours while eating he cries pulls away from the bottle, spits up and arches his back.  The pediatrician diagnosed him with acid reflux and order zantac and he is on nutramigin.  She also is sending us to a specialist and ordered an upper GI study.  I am just so tired every 4-6 hours I have to deal with his fit after eating.  He cries and can not be soothed.  He may stop for a minute or two then starts back up.  this can last upto 3 hours until he tires himself out.
Any veteran moms with suggestions how to soothe him while we wait to see the specialist (not for 3 weeks)  I would appreciate it.

www.thebabywearer.com/forum

how much does he weigh? I can help you figure out proper zantac dose
in the meantime, read all you can!

I have a LOT to say and most of it's here, in a link called 'groupie intro.'
it's looong but TRULY will help you- read through it, refer back to it, scroll through it/skim through it. You'll find yourself coming back to it!

I would say to also try some mylanta cherry supreme.

Mylanta Cherry Supreme is  the one variety of mylanta that does not contain aluminum.  you can't find it anymore, but you can find store brand equivalents. Try: rite-aid, cvs brand, wal mart, target, Bartell Drug (West coast), Dollar General, brand names: Geri-Care & Geri-Lanta Supreme, meijer, etc- just look for one that does not list aluminum in the ingredients.

you can give 1ml up to 5 times a day- it's safe, even for newborns. if you see loose stools back off.

9.7lbs = 4.3 kilos
maximum zantac dose by weight is 10mgs per kilo
so 4.3 x 10 = 43
that's 43mgs of zantac your baby can take in a 24hr time period

your bottle of liquid zantac says 15mgs/ml

this means that for every 1ml of liquid you give, there's 15mgs of the medicine zantac in that 1ml of liquid

so you take the 43 mgs per day and divide by 15 = 2.9
that's 2.9mls of zantac per day (24 hrs)
you can divide 'unevenly' and give a higher dose/portion in the evening/night

you can give in two or three doses (again, they do not have to be even)

don't just take my word on this!
read here:

Zantac dosing- my/other’s question (has axid & pepcid doses, too):

http://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=8288&PN=1

you CAN give mylanta and zantac at the same time (it helps to mask the taste of the zantac) and/or you can give the doses close to one another

you DO need to space other meds, though. But, zantac & mylanta can be given near each other or together.

Hi there,

My baby had the same symptoms and I had to fight my pediatrician who seemed to dismiss my concerns as "gas".  One thing that helped my baby was to create an incline in her crib.  I purchased 2 large wedge pillows ($30 each at Bed Bath & Beyond) and placed each one in her crib so they formed a "V".  I used blankets to fill any gaps between the crib and the pillow and made blanket rolls to keep her positioned on her side (she was an exclusive side sleeper).  Please, please, please be careful when doing this because there is a danger to putting anything in a crib with your baby but I was very comfortable with how my baby slept and this worked wonderfully for us.  Proceed with caution and only do this if you are comfortable.  They sell incline sleepers but they were all so expensive or weren't for use in the crib so I opted to make my own.  The incline position helps keep the acid from traveling back up which is what happens when the baby lies flat.

Hope that helps!

do you have a ped GI?

Looking for GI: http://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=660

there are recommendations for ped GIs in your area...

have you tried probiotics?

It's probably time for a PPI.
research all you can and TELL the dr what it is that your baby needs.
don't ask.

Prevacid 101:

scroll to the last page of this post, (it's actually also about other PPIs like prilosec, too)
http://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1936&PN=0&TPN=1

TELL dr you need new rx for _____, don't ask. TELL.

FAX FAX FAX  the dr

don't wait for a call...

start off with a THANK YOU Big%20smile

keep it short & sweet

stick to the FACTS (no emotions and ramblings)

state current meds, doses & symptoms

make request- flat out- short & sweet

provide pharmacist name & contact info

THANK AGAINBig%20smile

follow up by calling office to tell them fax was sent

call again later to discuss requests made in fax, ie:

is RX called in yet?

THANK YOUBig%20smile

Zantac did absolutely nothing for my baby. Pediatrician prescribed Zantac then Prevacid solutabs. My baby has a very sensitive gag reflex so holding that darn tablet in her cheek was nearly impossible without causing her to gag or throw up. The specialist finally prescribed Zegerid and it has been a god send. He also put her on probiotics (Biogaia). That's sold over the counter & does not require a script. Keep in mind your baby might also be colicky. Personally, I was dealing with colic, reflux and a milk protein allergy.

How long have you bern using Zantac? If over a week, try asking your pediatrician for a different med. also ask for some Carafate...your baby might have some irritation from the acid in his poor belly and the Carafate helps to coat it.
