![]() Topic: diagnosis for juliannaPosted: 07 October 2005 at 1:15pm |

julianna's biopsies came back and she is severely lactose intolerant. she can not have anything with lactose at all. the doctor said that a median score is 30, and julianna's lactase levels (the enzyme that helps you digest lactose) is only an 11. he also said that the lymph nodes in her colon were a little enlarged, due to the chronic diarrhea. we are still waiting for one more test to come back, but she seems to really be doing well. she has only been having diarrhea every couple of days instead of every day. her reflux is also very mild and the doctor did not see any damage. she can have dairy products made by lactaid, like milk, cheese and ice-cream because they contain the enzyme to help her digest the lactose. but still many baked products, ect. contain milk and she can not have those. the doctor said that this is not something that she will outgrow. because her diarrhea worsens with lactose she has to remain 100% lactose free so that we do not go into weight gain and development issues. i am trying to explain this to my mil who wants to bring PIZZA over tonight. still waiting for the boys RAST to come back to see if the allergist will skin test them. truthfully though, they are doing so well even on such a restricted diet. i even made chocolate chip cookies with rice flour, margarine and soy/gluten/dairy free chips. they were good! |

Laurie - At least you have some answers now. At least you have experience now with lactose free food since the boys are lactose intolerant. I honestly don't know how you do it. Hopefully Julianna will continue to feel better.

That's so great that you have a diagnosis!!! Maybe she will eventually be able to tolerate some lactose in baked foods. I was just talking to Hailey's doctor about lactose intolerance (he is) and he said he can eat things like cookies and other baked goods. Whenever we talk about Hailey's diet he brings this up (obviously, he forgets that she's MSPI which has absolutely nothing to do with lactose)!!!!!!! It's a lost cause. Can you get the enzyme as a supplement to give when she would eat these things? So sorry your family has trouble understanding. Maybe someday they will get a clue!!!!! |
