I posted elsewhere before I saw this preemie forum, so forgive me if you've already read my dilemma.

My baby girl was doing well on Prevacid until we tried her off for a couple weeks.  At first, she seemed to improve but then crashed and now refuses to eat and screams, won't sleep, etc.  She is back on the Prevacid as of 5 days ago, but no change so far.  How long does this take to work?  The doctor says if she refuses to eat in the next couple days, we should bring her back in and we'll change meds.  Is there something we can give in the meantime, Mylanta, maybe?  I am giving Tylenol to calm her down.  Life here is a nightmare right now.  I wonder if her throat is just so irritated and it's taking time to heal now.  She keeps sticking her fingers/fist in her mouth to gag herself, so I know her throat must be sore.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Unfortunately, it can take up to 2 weeks for the PPI's to kick in...you can give mylanta cherry supreme (i forget the dosing - someone else will chime in with it I'm sure) or ask about zantac or pepcid until the prevacid starts to work again.  Also, she may need a higher dose - has she gained wait since you stopped the prevacid a few weeks ago?  Hand in there - it worked once and will work again!

Hey Marys Mom... I hope things are going better.  I just wanted to ask how your little one was doing developmentally?  My son was a 31 weeker and adjusted he's only 3 months old... I know he's developing well.. but he's not really reaching for anything yet.  Has your little one started?  I don't know what else to do other than dangle stuff in front of/over him to entice him.  Any thoughts would be helpful.

He does like to stand in a jumperoo and bounce (he's always had VERY strong legs and great head control).  He coos and gurgles and almost laughs and has an amazing smile.  I would just love to help him along with grabbing and holding things.. especially since I think he may be teething and he doesn't know how to put a teething in his mouth really.  Anyway... hope things are going better for you.  :)

In answer to your question, she's doing very well developmentally.  In some ways, she is like a 7 month old (her true age) and in other ways, she is just a 4 month old (adjusted age).  Like your boy, she loves to "stand" and jump, and has great head control and strong legs.  Just in the last month, she did start reaching for things.  Like you, I was getting worried because her doctors would ask at every appt, and just at last month's appt, I said no, not reaching yet.  Then one day, out of the blue, she started reaching.  I really don't have any tips to offer, I think they just do it in their own time.  Mine is teething too and can't handle the regular sized teething rings.  So I give her a toy that is a hard teething ring about the size of a bracelet.  I'm not sure who gave it to us or where they found it.  I think it came with several other rings attached to it, and it took me awhile to realize that the whole assembly was too heavy for her, but when I detached the other rings, the one was just the right size for her.

Hope things continue to go well for you!
