I just bumped a thread that includes a discussion about this, but I thought that I would copy Joel's comments about this from a previous post.  A lot of people- including myself- have been wondering how to space these meds properly.  Note that when talking about spacing the mylanta and the PPI, he differentiates between immediate and delayed release.  (Laura, maybe could you link this to your intro?)

Lori,

It is PPIs and H2 blockers like Zantac, Axid, Tagamet, or Pepcid that you should not give within 4 hours of a PPI dose. If you are using an enteric coated form of PPI, then you should not give an antacid within about an hour of the PPI dose because it can destroy the coating and expose the drug to pockets of acid in the stomach. But with CaraCream or Zegerid it is fine to give it along with an antacid.

I don't know about giving mylanta with an H2 blocker.  He doesn't talk about that.  But as far as mylanta and PPIs and PPIs and H2 blockers it seems that:

1. PPIs and H2 blockers should not be given within 4hrs of each other.

2. Mylanta (or any other antacid) should not be given within an hour of any delayed release PPI (such as prevacid capsules/solutabs, and prilosec capsules/tablets/MUPS).

3. Mylanta (antacid) can be given any time relative to an immediate release PPI (Zegerid/CaraCream, or a properly compounded suspension).

I am new to all this. How do you know if it's immediate or delayed release? We're on the compound prilosec. I'd assume that's immediate, but I don't really know. Thanks

Sorry - all the messages didn't show up when I first opened this. Now I see the answer to my question.
