Topic: Back vs Tummy sleeping

I am so debating putting Cooper to sleep on his tummy, but I am so afraid of SIDS that I don't know that I can do it. I know that tummy is recommended for refluxers, but none of my doctors have told me to do it.

Last night was the worst night I had had in many weeks. He went down at 9, was stirring at 12:30 and I finally gave in and fed him at 2:30, but it took me until I think 3:15 to get him back down, haven't had that problem in weeks, and then he was up again at 5 and 6 and finally we both just got up for good at 6:30... I was home alone, so I am exhausted today and I think maybe he will sleep better on his tummy, just want some guidance. Thanks.

Ah, this is such a personal decision... it's hard to know what to do. Both of my kids were finally put on their tummies after many nights of what you have described. They slept much better that way. Our pediatrician finally suggested it in Ben's case after we had tried everything else, but it was a "last ditch effort" so to speak.

Both of them were very strong, good head and neck support, etc., so that was good. I started doing it first doing naps and actually sat there through one whole nap with my daughter to make sure she was ok. I didn't do this with my son, but it still worried me.

Didn't you post that he can turn over? I think once they start doing this, the risk of SIDS is supposedly lower.

Not alot of advice, sorry.

If you are going to try it I would get some kind of monitor, either an angel care monitor or an apnea monitor (maybe you can hire one). Even though tummy sleeping may be better for reflux there is no doubt that it is also related (at least for some babies) to SIDS. So having a monitor is your backup.

This is from the American Academy of Pediatrics & how they recommend that tummy sleeping is best for GERD babies. http://www.aap.org/new/sids/question.htm (thanks Sherry & Christine!)

There's a monitor that you can use called the Angel Care Monitor that many of the parents on this board have had great success with. BEANIE BABY: for day time naps I suggest this: Try putting her on her tummy & put a beanie baby on her back for 2 reasons- to see that she's breathing (the beanie baby will go up & down )

& for the weight- put your hand on her back & then slowly leave it & the beanie baby is there instead...

That is such a personal choice. We put Addy to sleep on her back but also had the Angelcare Monitor which I would highly recommend. Tons of online places sell them as well as BabiesRUs...I did a search and this is the first one that popped up:
