I know these are medicine, but I didn't know where else to post. Someone mentioned that I might want to try it with Cooper b/c of his horrible diaper rash as a possible way to prevent it getting this bad in the future. The more I think about it, it sound like a good idea. However I am clueless as to where to get them or what to get. Can anyone tell me what to get and where. We need it to be dairy/soy free as he has MSPI... and I am totally clueless as I already said. TIA.

WHAT ARE PROBIOTICS?
DO THEY NEED TO BE REFRIGERATED? (YES, the majority of the time.) Read here for more:

You really can't go wrong with the Kirkman's Pro-Bio Gold. It's likely one of the best available. It's a good multistrain probiotic that is completely dairy and soy free. For children under 30 lbs it is recommended to give 1/2 capsule per day. Some kids with more severe GI problems may need more (like my little Paige).
Some kids may actually show worsening of GI symptoms initially when starting a probiotic. This is OK - it's a sign that the "bad" bacteria, yeast, etc. is dying off as it is being outcrowded by the "good" bacteria in the probiotic. These die-off symptoms could be irritability, gas, cramping, diarrhea, etc. and usually only last about a few days.

I know the apex store requires a physicians authorization. Another way you can order the Klaire labs probiotic is by calling them directly. Here's some info that was passed on to me and is how I ordered Averi's probiotics...
"Yes, the best way the get the Klaire labs probiotic is online, or by phoning Klaire directly. If you want to order directly from Klaire Labs they ask for a physician reference (which I personally think is silly, but who I am to say!). There is a physician who has written a couple books by the name of Dr. Jacqueline McCandless who was actually the doctor that worked together with Klaire labs to develop their probiotics. She has said in her books that people can use her as their reference physician to acquire Klaire products without having seen her directly as a doctor. This is what I do, and then Klaire also gives a discount to anyone using Dr. McCandless's name. You can phone them toll-free at 1-888-488-2488." Originally posted by Cooper's mom
the flora baby is working great. It is made by renew life and so far so good. We are on day six without any reactions that I can see. [befote this one I ordered Country Life Maxi Baby-Dophilus...it has trace milk/lactose & baby got bumps on his face...]

Just wanted to chime in that I bought iFlora 4-Kids. It's formulated for children under the age of 1. It says it is dairy free. The "other ingredient" listed is Rice Starch. It is also a powder that I added to Sarah's bottles.

The kind I use contains no aspartame, sucrose, sorbitol, artificial colors or flavors, wheat, corn, soy or yeast proteins, or animal products (dairy)...it is BioSet hypoallergenic Probiotic Supplement. We get them at our chiroprators office.

we use floraMore by renewlife as well. this one is for children 1 and up. It is working really well for kendra( she has lost of allergies and no reaction at all so far). she had an yeast infection b/c of the antibiotics she is on now for another ear infection she has and it's under control with this probiotic. Also renew life probiotic has FOS (fructooligosaccharides) added to it, a type of carbohydrates that acts as food for acidofhilus, helping this little bugs multiply and attach themselves better to the intestine
Also, a mom a know told me that i could springle it on kendra's bottom as well when her rashes get too bad. She has done with her baby with good results. from Happy Mom:
Taking a probiotic supplement can be very helpful because probiotics coat our entire digestive tract. When we are low on probiotics then our system is left unprotected and can get raw and can even bleed. But one of the reasons we can be low on probiotics is because excess acid from our stomach kills probiotics. And most often the reason our stomach produces too much acid is from a lack of digestive enzymes. Our pancreas is what makes the enzymes and puts them into the stomach to break down our food (protein in particular). But for some people including babies, the pancreas has a hard time keeping up. So it is extremely important to also take enzymes with the probiotics. I use Digestive Health from www.corehealthproducts.com. If you want to learn more about what all we tried and found to help our children with their reflux problems you can go to my blog help4acidreflux.com
people list the ones they've used (CHECK INGREDIENTS BEFORE PURCHASING!!!):
Nature's Way Primadophilus for Children (has trace amounts of milk)
Udo's Choice kyo-adophoulous Natrol Culturelle
Click here: http://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=15171 & scroll to post by HappyMom I use: baby Jarrodophilus but I think they have milk or soy? you'd have to check...I buy it at the health food supermarket, they are in the refrigerated section (in my store they're by the flax seed oil)
you have to look at the labels to see which one(s) are milk/soy free and/or ask a person working there...

We used baby Jarrodophilus (sorry if I spelt it wrong). Like Laura, it was in the refrigerator section by the flax seed oil.
I've been wondering lately about BIO-K. Anyone try it?

I have limited access to places that have probiotics for children. And to top it off I need soy/milk free. I was able to find one at the only place in town that has them for kids and it is the Natures way. It does say it may contain minimal residual traces of milk/soy, but that is better than actually having milk/soy. so we are going to try it. It says for kids 2-12 and since Cooper is only 4.5months, I am only going to give a 1/2 tablet daily. How long should it take to see results?

Beth, I've been on this probiotic hunt for the longest time now. I finally found one that is both soy and milk free as well as hypoallergenic. I looked into several others that claimed "dairy free", but they all had milk listed (just as you said, "a trace"). I'm just too much of a weany to try it.
Anyway, the kind I found was recommended by Dianne. It's called Country Life Power-Dophilus. It's not specifically for children, but the pediatrician said it would be fine anyway. I looked it up on its website (just google it), and then you can type in your zip code, and it will give you store near you that carries it.
I just started it with Ben during this last round of antibiotics, and no diaper rash, so that's good!
Hope you are able to find it.

Oh, and Lori,
I don't use it, but a friend of mine swears by the BIO-K. She says that her little one hasn't been sick once since she started it. She had several ear infections in a row, started the BIO-K, the ear infections stopped... she stopped the BIO-K, and she got another ear infection! So, since restarting the probiotic, she is healthy again. Maybe a coincidence??

Beth,
I don't know how long it will take for results. We have Udo's Choice Infant Blend b/c it said on line that it was dairy free. But then when I bought it, it says contains trace amounts of milk so I didn't give it to Abby. She is also MSPI so I didn't want to chance it.
I did find Solaray BabyLife Probiotics that are milk and soy free. I have to order some. Here is the website that I found them on http://www.suzannes.com/allnatenpow2.html

Of course, I'm in Aus, but mine is a powder, I just pop it in her bottle (you can even feed it on a spoon). Doesn't help much because products are different over here! I forget to give it to Alana a lot, but usually once I remember it is only a day or so before I notice a difference in her bowel movements.
