My daughter is on 15mg of Prevacid Solutabs and now taking pepcid complete...if she starts to get relief from this combination, will this effect the results of the upper GI? I don't want her to finally get some relief and then the upper GI not show anything and then them take her off of her medicine.
I'd appreciate your help!
Thanks
Candace

I don't think they will affect it but I could be wrong. I think what they are looking for mainly are structural problems which are seen on xray and the meds don't affect that. We had an upper gi at 10 or 11 wks and all they did was give him a bottle of barium and watch what happens which in our case was severe reflux (which they usually don't even see on the upper gi) and that he didn't have pyloric stenosis so I like that is all they really look at. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

I second Beth's response.  The upper GI is only intended to look for structural abnormalities.  Sometimes, a child will reflux the barium, and that will show on the upper GI.  But if that doesn't happen, it doesn't mean that there's no reflux.  Our upper GI was normal, and the hospital mistakenly commented that "there was no reflux".  She indeed had quite bad reflux.  If your doctor is using the upper GI to diagnose reflux, then they should consider additional testing.  Good luck.
