Hi, I have a 2 month old adopted DD. I'm here because we noticed a little blood in DD's stools. Our ped switched her to Nutramigen formula b/c she thought it could be a milk protein allergy. It has now been over a month since we first noticed the blood, and over 3 weeks since we started the Nutramigen and she is still having blood in her stools. I don't always see it, and when I do it is just a couple of small red streaks. However, I have taken dirty diapers to the ped during our follow-up appointments and they have all tested positive for blood. The dr. wants us to try Zantac. She does spit up a bit, but she is a happy spitter. She is a happy baby overall, with no other concerns except the blood in her stool. I am hesitant to try the Zantac b/c it doesn't seem like acid reflux is the issue here. The dr. thought maybe acid could be irritating her digestive tract, but I just feel like she would be showing some discomfort if that were the case. Anyway, has anyone ever heard of Zantac helping with blood in stools? I have just started her on a probiotic supplement (supposed to be animal-product free) as well as L-Glutamine to help heal her digestive tract. I'm wondering if we need to move on to a formula like Neocate. It is so upsetting not to know how to help her! My oldest son had lots of blood in his dirty diapers. I'm sorry your little one is still struggling. :(
Taking a probiotic supplement can be very helpful because probiotics coat our entire digestive tract. When we are low on probiotics then our system is left unprotected and can get raw and can even bleed. But one of the reasons we can be low on probiotics is because excess acid from our stomach kills probiotics. And most often the reason our stomach produces too much acid is from a lack of digestive enzymes. Our pancreas is what makes the enzymes and puts them into the stomach to break down our food (protein in particular). But for some people including babies, the pancreas has a hard time keeping up. | Thanks so much for all the information, I am slowly working my way through it. DD goes back to the dr. tomorrow, and they will test another diaper. I have been giving her the probiotic and L-glutamine, and I don't think I have seen any more blood. Her stools look less green to me now too. I am crossing my fingers that maybe they are helping. Although I have thought it was better before, and the diapers still tested + for blood. If they still do this time, I think I will talk to the dr. about Neocate. Will let you know what I find out! |

Gahhh, still testing positive :( I really thought she was doing better. I'm ordering Neocate now. My insurance won't cover it, so is their website the best place to get it? Oh, and thank you for the test strip info too! Will order some to have at home. |

Hi, sorry I haven't updated in a while! As of right now, DD (4 months old) has been on Neocate for almost 7 weeks. We had a diaper tested when she had been on it for about 3 weeks, and for the first time, it did NOT test positive for blood. So we have kept her on the Neocate. We also started Zantac because of the spitting up. She rarely ever seemed to be in pain and is still a happy little baby, but I was concerned about aspiration with the amount she was spitting. The dr. witnessed her spit up 4 times at one appointment, and strongly suggested that we try it. So she has been on Zantac now for about 4 weeks. I think it may be helping some; she does still spit up, but it seems to be less. She sees the dr. for her 4 month appointment tomorrow, and I will have them test a diaper again. My questions will be how long should she stay on both the Neocate and the Zantac? Do we keep her on the Neocate since it seemed to help, or could it be that the Neocate fixed the issue that caused the blood in her stool, so that she could be weaned back to either a soy or back to Nutramigen or Alimentum? I still have not attempted to contact my insurance company. I am too chicken. I'm going have my doctor fill out the sample letter on the Neocate website. She has encouraged me to contact them, so I know she will cooperate. Do most people start with a phone call or a letter? I'm not confident that the representative that answers the phone will be able to help! |

hi there! so glad to read your news! yes, I'd fight for the insurance to cover the neocate & I would also have your baby stay on it for quite a while- maybe at about 6 months you could try alimentum but, really, I would wait until about 9 months to try it...why mess with something that's working? also: I would NOT start giving any solids early! again, baby already has a sensitive system, so why 'mess' with it? starting solids is more for the 'experience' of eating & not for actual nutrition- solids are more for nutrition as baby is becomes older (12 months)...
as for the insurance- I'm going to give you a link to read &, also, in the link there's info about getting some company called Apria to help you- so THAT would be a phone call, to start, and you could go from there
