Jackson has started teething. He is drooling, chewing on his fingers and hands, fussing more than usual, napping poorly, etc. I can see a tiny white cap poking through his gums (bottom center tooth). Once you can see the tooth coming through, how long does the pain last? I cannot believe that as soon as reflux is under control, this kicks in! Poor kid can’t catch a break for longer than a week!
December 16, 2007 at 9:06 am #46427AnonymousInactiveAlso, is there anything terrible about Orajel?
December 16, 2007 at 2:55 pm #46430hellbenntKeymasterthere is nothing ‘terrible’ about orajel, but many on here have learned from their doctors that it might make baby’s reflux feel worse- the numbing can get into their throats and ‘confuse’ them w/ the reflux- imagine your throat is numb & spit-up comes up- it either might be a great thing bcse you can’t feel it- or it might be a weird thing bcse you can’t feel it to either spit it up or swallow it back down-
so all of this to say that it can go either way…one thing that does work (thanks Ann Marie!) is that benedryl is good for teething- there is a lot of extra saliva/drool w/ teething and this has a lot of histimines and benedryl is an antihistimine…you can rub a little on the gums and at the worst part you can give some at night- some babies get sleep with it & some get the opposite effect & get wired, so if you’ve never given it, you might want to try it during the day (oral dosing- not the rubbing some on the gums- this should be fine anytime I’d guess)http://www.askdrsears.com go to the Medicine Cabinet and you can find the exact benedryl doseI have read both reviews…December 17, 2007 at 10:56 am #46440AnonymousInactiveDoes the benedryl help pain or just salivation? Does the extra saliva bother them a lot? My son will scream right before a nap and I will apply oragel and he will fall asleep within a minute or two. So, I think that it is the pain that is keeping him up. I can only give oragel 4 times a day, so I really need an alternative!
December 17, 2007 at 8:00 pm #46460hellbenntKeymasterI think the benedryl helps the pain? I rub it on my baby’s gums and he calms down…
December 17, 2007 at 8:17 pm #46463AnonymousInactiveCan it be used on a 4 month old baby? I read somewhere that the baby had to be at least 6 months. Is this also true of Motrin? I gave Jackson Hylands tablets today. They helped somewhat (he still took terrible naps), but his nose got very congested and one of his eyes was itchy. Not sure if he was allergic to the tablets or if it is something unrelated. Could being a new Mom be any more confusing? I felt like I was constantly shoving meds in his mouth today- motrin, tylenol, hylands tablets, oragel, prevacid! His poor liver.
December 17, 2007 at 8:29 pm #46464hellbenntKeymasterI’m no medical professional but I bet a drop or two of benedryl on the gums is fine…
May 31, 2008 at 10:50 pm #52008AnonymousInactiveI’m trying to remember from my first one, but I think the worst part of it is right before it breaks through, and then it gets a little easier. Of course, there could be another one adding to it- my first DD’s teeth always came in pairs.
