Hi!
Evan is now 14 mths old. Celiac is something that has been mentioned since he was 4 weeks old (by his general ped & ped GI) but obviously we weren’t going to re-visit it until later when he was ingesting gluten so he could be tested (based on his reaction).
Anyway, when he was around 8 mths old we tried oatmeal (we didn’t try rice b/c at the time he wasn’t tolerating rice through my breastmilk). It was the “Happy Bellies” brand. It wasn’t labeled gluten-free but it was soy & wheat free. Anyway, he reacted horribly to it… full body eczema, mucous in his stool, etc – within 2 days.
I haven’t tried anything else w/ gluten until almost 2 weeks ago. I started w/ some simple wheat things… wheat chex, puffed wheat, some crackers, wheat tortillas, homeade banana bread (he’s okay w/ egg), etc. I tried to pick items that had the least amount of ingredients & obviously all ingredients he was already tolerating. Also, I tried to stay away from yeast (or give very little) initially since he hadn’t had that yet. Around the 5 day mark he started eating pretzels more & more (which included yeast obviously).
For the 1st week he was fine… like, totally fine. Nothing whatsoever out of the ordinary. At the 1 week mark he started waking at night. Not fussing (I didn’t need to go in there) but awake for 1hr+ in the middle of the night. He also started having loose, somewhat mucousy diapers. His appetite decreased dramatically… & he’s been more fussy/needy while awake. He is still exhibiting these symptoms & I stopped any gluten/wheat on Monday afternoon. He hasn’t had any eczema/rashes though which he has always gotten when having a food reaction. Also, normally when he reacts poorly to a food he’s up & miserable (ie: needs my comfort) at night – not just up babbling like he has been.
So, my question is: could he be reacting to the wheat/gluten after such a long time after the initial intro (7 days)? I’m hoping ‘no’, but am assuming it could “build-up” in his system. Also, wouldn’t he have the eczema?
The symptoms he’s having (waking at night, loose stool, decreased appetite, fussy) could also mean a little bug or something I know but I’m worried. I’ve obviously stopped any wheat products.
His ped GI’s specialty is celiac & we actually have a check-up appt w/ him in 1.5 weeks (Tues Aug. 25) so we will definitely discuss this. We are going on vacation for a week starting Saturday & I’m so bummed he’s clearly not feeling himself as the food intros have been so promising up until this point.
Thanks for any insight!
