Floppy airway possiable repair.

I am new here .And a mother of a 18 month old little girl that has Faught so hard her whole life.
Back in May of 08 she was offically diagnosed with a floppy airway. I was told that it would correct itself by 1 year -15 months. She also asperated And was diagnosed with hypertonia and hypotonia along with other diagnoses.

Her ENT Is going to remove her tonsils Tuesday.We did a sleep study friday that showed Apnea and The stridor from her floppy airway.I was told that her airway was shutting off.And they may want to repair her airway.

I am waiting on them to conference with her ENT and for the results of the scope of her airway tuesday .

What i am trying to find is how do they repair the airways and what is the surgery and recovery like?

(she was born with the floppy airway i noticed retraction when i first got to hold her and it was all over looked.She was born non breathing)

Hi there. My daughter also had a floppy airway- tracheamalacia/laryngomalacia and stridor, but it was not bad and corrected itself. Feeding was hard, and she coughed and gagged a lot, but didn’t aspirate that we could tell. You won’t likely find a lot of people on this site who had the same surgery. I’d suggest checking out http://www.parent-2-parent.com/forum . There are a lot of people on that site who have children who have had swallowing and breathing problems, and also children with special needs such as hyper/hypotonia. Good luck with the surgery. VERY curious what they will do to repair. Our Carter also has a floppy airway and he is now 4! He is better than he used to be, but I don’t think he is (still) aspirating, so not sure if there is a need to repair? Need to look further with our pulm, but other issues with boys have pulled us to do more triage for other things first. Would love to hear the results and what you find out, so please, please post your info.

Thanks. I am curious to.I know it has to be a risky and hard surgery .I am not sure what they will do yet. She was healthy during her sleep study with a pulse ox of just 95.(i know this is not bad .but its not where it should be either) and just last night her pulse ox was going between 90-95. (we have a home pulse ox) She isnt sick no runny nose no cough. (besides her reflux cough) so our only guess is its her tonsils. and her airway.

She does reflux and we are waiting for her to heal from the tonsils being removed tuesday to do a PH probe to see how bad it is before we do anymore . Her GI is talking about a low dose antibiotic I do not like that.I know what can happen if we go that route.The antibiotic is the only one that helps with her ear infections.(shes going on her second set of tubes)

She asperated for what they suspect her whole first year. Her last swallow study on her birthday showed no more asperation just a little penatraction. But we didnt find that out intill after her First ENT surgery and she asperated her first feeding.(the idiot post op nurses didnt listen to me sent her home to get very ill her pulse ox after surgery was in the 80s )so she has been through alot.

Her surgery had to be post poned. She spiked a fever last night.38.4c. or 101.1f. we went to the e.r. with her and by the time we got there her ear had started draining puss. so surgery got pushed back intill the 27th. but this will give her ENt time to look at her sleep study and come up with more of a plan.She sees her GI before the surgery.so we will have another plan of action for her Reflux.
