Going to ped GI for 5 month old, what to expect?

Despite my 4 food diet (been a week) we’re still unmanaged. I was hoping we wouldn’t have to go to this appt but we do.

Dd is 5 month and has had poop cultures but no other diagnostic testing at all. What should I expect and what should I press?

Spitting has been under control for several months now. Still green poop (down to several times a day) and at night she’s uner fussy and wants to eat all.the.time. Sleeping elevated.

Diet changes can take up to 2 weeks to really take full effect. You might want to continue for another week and see if that helps at all.

I don’t know what to tell you about what to expect at the GI’s or what to press. We only went one time to a GI and were told my children were gaining weight ok, looked ok, and the dose of Prevacid was ok that they were on, and that crying was normal, and if I wanted they could do an endoscope. I was not impressed. One good thing that she did was recommend that I read a book titled “Colic Solved” written by another GI. I really like his book because it said that the term “colic” should not even be used today. Babies don’t cry for just NO reason! There are 2 types of “colic” acid reflux and food intolerances (mostly milk).

I am sure that there are GI’s that are more helpful and caring than the one I went to! 🙂 I wish you the best in finding some answers!

Sheesh. We’re driving 4 hours round trip. If I get that response I’ll first cry, then head home and look for you all here in the ‘help’ section. Baby’s eating every two hours during the night.

Sure is nice to have people that understand here. People ask how she is and when I tell them they’re completely flustered. Nobody knows what to say.

Not having family anywhere near is not a decision I’d make again.

Yes I certainly hope you get some help! If I’d have gone in there with a screaming baby that was severely under weight, I think I would’ve got more help. The truth was that I went seeking answers. My children’s problems were somewhat under control but they were in pain and cried a lot still and slept poorly at night. I wanted to find out what was CAUSING the digestive problems rather than just control the symptoms. My children were under average weight but ate well. I think that all the GI could see was that they looked well. I now know that doctors are TAUGHT to treat symptoms. They are taught what tests and drugs to prescribe for what symptom. It is not their fault that they are not taught to look at the root cause of problems or to figure out how to prevent problems.

I am sorry if I have discouraged you about your visit. The GI you go to might know just what your child needs to clear up her problems! I hope so!!! 🙂

I am sorry you don’t have any family around! That is tough! 🙁 All my family lives in Nebraska and I in Kansas. 🙁 I have my in laws here (but they are extremely busy and don’t have a lot of time to help out) but luckily when Quinton was so sick as a baby, I had a dear friend that had no children and was bored! 🙂

If I lived near you I’d love to babysit so you could get a break and a nap! 🙂

I did get solaray acidophilous (sp?). There are 12 strains and it APPEARS to be milk/soy free. I don’t have probiotics for baby yet, thought I’d start with me. She seemed to be fussier after I took them but it could be just her natural course. Last night and this morning have been ok, which I’ll take, perhaps she’s adjusting.

I do have a call in to dd’s ped, asking if she knew this gi, what to expect, what to hope for, what to press and whether or not her ped wants to do another poop culture before we go.

Our closest family is like 800 miles away. Yup. I do have a friend that will help but since baby nurses every 2 hours or so it’s hard to do anything which I’m sure you all understand. We’re thinking of relocating. Now if we’d just have time to work on a resume for dh!

I’d read about the doctor and book on here yesterday, ordered the book from our library last night already.

Have people on here had luck with L. reuteri?

states that L. reuteri is good to help w/ emptying the stomach faster and to help decrease spitting up

IIRC (if I recall), your baby doesn’t spit so much – seems like digestive upset (diapers) – so not sure this particular strain would help? I don’t think it’d hurt, though…

“The good bacteria that are found in the intestinal system,” Keeler said.

This probiotic is in breast milk, many over the counter pills and yogurts.

“It took almost four weeks, but by day 28 of the study it was a greater than 50 percent decrease in the crying time as compared to the gas drops,” Keeler said.

In fact, after a month only 7 percent of the babies, who got Simethicone, or gas drops, saw relief, crying an average of 25 percent less.

But among the babies who received the probiotic, almost all of them — 95 percent — were less irritable, and they cried less than half as often as before.

Good job on the 12 strain probiotics! 🙂 I hope they help. If you don’t find a lot of help with them though you might want to add some digestive enzymes and see if that helps more.
