When do you put the car seat facing forward (is it 20 lbs?) and what car seat do you recommend?
May 24, 2007 at 11:08 pm #34399AnonymousInactiveSorry, I meant “is it when the baby REACHES 20 lbs”…
May 24, 2007 at 11:42 pm #34400AnonymousInactiveI think the law is 20 lbs and 1 year old.
I think I am going to get the Britax Declathon because I like the added EPS foam and the crotch strap is adjustable for Adriana’s chubby legs
May 25, 2007 at 11:16 am #34432AnonymousInactiveI think the new recommendations are to keep them rear facing until they are 30 lbs.
May 25, 2007 at 12:11 pm #34437AnonymousInactivethe minimum is 1 year and 20 lbs, however it is much much safer to keep them rear facing until they max out the seat limits (usually 35 lbs)
here is a great video:

May 25, 2007 at 12:29 pm #34443AnonymousInactiveThanks, ladies! I will be turning Addy’s carseat back to rear facing today!!! I couldn’t even watch the videos (I get way too emotional with stuff like that) so I just read the articles. Thanks again for posting them!
May 25, 2007 at 1:13 pm #34448AnonymousInactiveWhat are they videos about? If there are car accidents caught on tape, then I’d rather not watch it b/c I’m chicken when it comes to this stuff 🙁
Jenny and Tracy-I heard a lot about it but never really saw it in the store (probably did not pay attention to it). What do you like about the Britax Decathalon? Thanks
May 25, 2007 at 1:24 pm #34449AnonymousInactiveFirst I will say to make sure it is comfortable. My dh doesn’t like to spend money and goes for the cheapest thing he can find. Big mistake when your looking for a carseat. Poor Justice sits in a very uncomfy seat. We have actually added padding because it has basically has none.
Question for you all. How do your little ones do in their carseats? Justice is okay, but doesn’t like it and we usually have to hear him cry a lot. Luke was really bad. He would scream everywhere we went. We turned him around as soon as possible, but Justice is still rear facing at the moment.
May 25, 2007 at 1:25 pm #34450AnonymousInactiveJust watched the videos (curious me!) and now I’m definitely convinced to keep Ariella rear-facing. I really do not mind. We just need to make a few adjustments (like tink the windows so that she’s not that hot).
May 25, 2007 at 1:27 pm #34451AnonymousInactiveShelby, same problem with us. Ariella HATES the car seat. She screams histerically. Last weekend we went to our vacation house (2 1/2 hours away). I had to sing songs, play games with her, etc. I was EXHAUSTED by the time we got there and she still managed to scream. This happens every time we travel, what’s why I can’t drive anywhere with her alone without DH b/c the screams are just too much.
May 25, 2007 at 1:28 pm #34452AnonymousInactiveI read a ton of reviews, consumer reports, safety tests, etc. when we were looking to buy a larger carseat. I know the Decathalon rated high when we bought ours but I no longer have a subscription to consumer reports website to check on that. It is pricey but I thought we could cut back in other areas for a few months to get a good, safe carseat. It is VERY cushiony and has a lot of little pillows (thats what I call them) in and around the seat, head, etc. It is VERY large and takes up a ton of room. I have a sports utility so its not a big deal to us and Addy is our only child so no one else is in the back with her. If we had a smaller car, I might have gone with a smaller model. But it fits in the center nicely and if we have guests, they can still fit on either side of her. It is a 5 point harness, goes up to 65 lbs (5-33 lbs rear facing), has several different positions that the straps can be in so its fits well. The straps never get tangled. I recently had to remove the cover and pillows and all to wash it and it wasn’t hard as I thought it would be to get it back together. We have really liked it so far!
Here is info on it from the britax site:
May 25, 2007 at 1:32 pm #34453AnonymousInactiveAddy is not the happiest camper in her carseat but she isn’t too bad. One thing I regret doing is letting her watch baby einstein dvds in the car on our portable dvd player. (I was against it from the beginning but my mom bought us one since we travel 3 1/2 hours usually every month to our parents houses. I am big on using your imagination to entertain yourself and not letting technology ruin imagination.) Addy was a good traveler before, and then after we used it a few times, she started thinking she needed to be entertained the ENTIRE time in the car. We have since stopped using it and she is getting better but for a few months, traveling was pure crying and whining!!!
