Evan cries constantly in the car… from the second he’s put into the carseat (he’s in the Graco snugride right now) until he’s taken out.
When we get where we’re going (usually Brodie’s preschool or therapy) he’s sweaty, all red faced & snotty from crying … not to mention it’s really hard for both Brodie & me to listen to the entire time. I look back @ Brodie & he’s cringing & all I can say is “I feel the same way.”I’ve already purchased his Britax marathon & it’s sitting in the garage. We’ll probably try it the next day or so. I’m a bit hesitant b/c the graco is so easy to lug around since I also have Brodie, etc. I plan on keeping the graco in the car if I need it for the stroller or shopping or whatever… or I can also just wear him.My question is: are some kiddos just like this (hate the car rides)? & when do they outgrow it.I don’t think he’s in pain b/c this is literally the only time he cries during the day (besides when he’s tired or bored). One of my friend’s ds did this too (& he had no reflux or intolerances) & I know I’ve heard of other dbs just disliking the carseat/car ride.I don’t know how much more we can handle ! He used to cry for about 5 min then fall asleep but now that he’s a bit older he’s not doing that any more.September 3, 2008 at 7:10 pm #56029AnonymousInactiveOh how I can relate to this. I remember sometimes, if we were traveling at a steady pace for a while, Evie would quiet down and then I would see a yellow light and panic! I would literally curse other drivers in front of me that stopped at yellow lights b/c she would start crying as soon as we stopped. I think that once she forward faced, it went away a little, but I still REALLY try to avoid long trips and pack the DVD player, snacks and a huge bag of toys if I have to do it. Even now, after 20 minutes in the car, she will start to whine.
I do remember that it was NOT pain related — she just doesn’t like to be strapped into something. I also remember Baby Einstein working pretty good. We put the DVD player on the headrest of the backseat which helped. HTH
September 3, 2008 at 7:49 pm #56034hellbenntKeymasterwith the Marathon, I just use(d) a pouch all.the.time.
that’s me, the babywearer, LOL!hotsling & comfey joey are my favoritesSeptember 3, 2008 at 8:33 pm #56037AnonymousInactiveOh the horror!! It brings back some (bad) memories…
Hailey HATED the car. She hated the carseat too. The second I put her in, it started. The wailing and crying and screaming hysterically, until she ultimately made herself projectile vomit all over herself and the car. I used to think that I was going to lose it, and wasn’t sure whether to laugh or cry when people would offer up the good ‘ol advice to her sleeping problems “Just put her in the car and take her for a drive, she’ll fall right asleep”… Yah, right! She hated it and we all hated it for that reason. Things did get better around 3-4 months old. Not great, but better, and then continued to get better throughout her first 6 months. We got to the point where she would tolerate the car for the most part. Sometimes she would still cry, but it was definitely better. When we turned her around things definitely got better. Hang in there. It was awful!September 3, 2008 at 9:12 pm #56038AnonymousInactiveWe used the snug ride as well and now are in the britax marathon. Cooper did okay for short trips in the snug ride, but hated anything that was more than 30 min or so and I figured out 1- he was uncomfortable and 2- he would fall asleep and then wake up and freak out b/c he was “alone” So someone was always in the backseat with him if at all possible until he was turned around. Even in the Britax on long trips he would freak out if he was alone. But short trips improved dramatically when we moved carseats. I didn’t do this until he was 6 months old and sitting up by himself b/c he didn’t do well with baby wearing. I would go ahead and switch if you can wear him when you are out and about. Good Luck.
September 4, 2008 at 1:28 pm #56067AnonymousInactiveThanks ladies… the crying is just so hard to listen to but frustrating @ the same time since I know he’s fine & just protesting whatever he’s protesting.
I may end up trying the dvd player. He has a baby einstein thing that plays music & has lights (suprise surprise ) that is attached to the headrest now… it intrigued him for a wk or so but now he’s over it.I know it will probably be easier when we turn him but that’s SO far away-lol. Also, I was hoping to not have to turn him right @ 12mths old since rear-facing is the safest. We kept Brodie rf until almost 21mths old but Evan’s a totally diff’t creature so who knows…Laura- we are still using the Moby mostly. I have the hotsling (someone gave it to me) but for the life of me I can’t figure it out. I’ve read the directions, watched the dvd, etc. I’m usually pretty good w/ those things but I just can’t get it. I’ve never heard of the comfy joey – I’ll have to check it out.Beth- yeah, when dh is driving I always sit in the backseat but honestly it doesn’t really help. He screams the same if I’m back there as he does when I’m driving & nobody (besides Brodie) is back there. Thanks again everybody… I brought the marathon in the house last night & put him in it to adjust the straps. He was ok w/ it for about 3-5 min then he was fussing again. At least I’ll know I’m trying everything I can when we switch.September 4, 2008 at 8:12 pm #56100hellbenntKeymasterI wish I could come show you how to use the hotsling! just used it today (keep one in my car) w/ ari (25lbs or thereabouts)…
September 24, 2008 at 2:31 pm #57065AnonymousInactiveI am having major internet issues (ok, not MAJOR, but annoying to me) – hence why I haven’t been around a lot lately. I can’t get into my email @ all so I’ve been only able to check from my phone (pita!).
Anyway, just wanted to update to say that Evan really only cries probably 1 out of 5 (or less) car trips now since switching to the marathon. Don’t know if it’s b/c of the marathon or if it’s b/c he’s a bit older… who knows. All I know is that the car rides (& we have many of them: to & from preschool, therapy, etc) are a lot more pleasant.Oh & Laura: I’ve tried the hotsling again & just can’t get it @ all… maybe I’m just silly (that’s the word we use in our house instead of stupid). I’m going to have dh see if he can help me… maybe he’ll see something I’m missing-lol.erinntx2008-09-24 14:33:00
September 24, 2008 at 5:40 pm #57078AnonymousInactiveWe just got Nicholas the Marathon two weekends ago. He actually falls asleep in the car, which he has never done. They must be really comfy. The only downside is that I want a new cover for it and they retail for $79 each. YIKES!
September 24, 2008 at 6:03 pm #57080hellbenntKeymasterSeptember 25, 2008 at 11:43 am #57103AnonymousInactiveThanks Laura! I think our internet issues are resolved (crossing fingers) so I will check out those videos this afternoon.
May 6, 2009 at 5:17 pm #62426AnonymousInactiveThat’s awesome that he isn’t crying much in the car anymore! I’m currently going through the same thing and we have the Graco Snug Ride. The minute I set her in her seat she screams her head off, and usually does so the entire car ride. It can get so frustrating so I know how you feel. Hopefully our car rides will get better when we switch to the Britax too!
