I don’t think vaccines should be one size fits all and more precaution guilines should be added. Like don’t do combo vaccines or wait until the child is older, ect. Don’t get me wrong, vaccines has saved lives and i am not against them, but again the current vaccination schudlue combine with some funky ingredients is just insane for a tiny baby’s body to handle. This is my personal opinion of course.Well said Leo,I had to make a decision about Landen’s vaccines (b/c of his MFPI) and create a separate schedule for him and like Sheri said, I get bullied (eyerolls and huffs) when I have to tell the nurse that I will not be getting Landen vax’d at each appt. It makes me feel like I am doing something wrong and I am treated like I don’t know anything. But when I ask them to explain why I should get them for my MFPI baby, I am “all out of time” for that appt, but you know, Insurance dictates how much time I get with my pedi. You all make very good points. I have been trying to avoid posting here all afternoon, I NEVER want to spark a debate. You all made valid points. We all need to do what is best for our LO’s.Christine, you also made a good point about FluShot. My best childhood friend died from pericarditis from Flu Complication in 2003 and I still havent gotten over her death. It makes it 500x as hard when deciding whether or not to vax myself/kids for the flu every year.September 15, 2008 at 7:43 pm #56658AnonymousInactiveThis is a good thread and it doesn’t appear to heated at all. I applaud everyone for having an intelligent, mature informative discussion on something that is so contraversial. That’s why I like this board above all others! You all are the best moms!! So, I figure now’s my chance to ask you all a vax question. (Sorry for the total hijack BTW)
Do all of your Dr.’s let you skip vaccines? I have heard that a lot of peds discharge patients for not getting vaccines. Our ped just let Evie skip the MMR (for now) but she’s gotten all of her other shots. We will address it again at the 2 year well.I find it sad that the public is quick to slam parents for choosing not to vaccinate. I think we/you/they only do this because they are terrified of what “could” happen.September 15, 2008 at 8:29 pm #56661AnonymousInactiveMy DDs ped had no problems w/me choosing to wait to vaccinate Averi. I think she understood b/c I came w/plenty of realistic reasons for me deciding to hold off for now. We just had to sign a form saying we weren’t vaccinating at this time and that was that. I just want to make sure we know what Averi’s possibly allergic to or to even wait out and let her intolerances pass before we vaccinate. They put so many things into vaccines there’s no telling what/when/if your LO could/would react. I just personally feel better waiting until she’s 2 or beginning a modified/safer vaccine schedule. It’s definately a personal decision and can be a very heated topic.
KATIE: When the time comes and you do decide on the MMR vaccine, have you considered breaking it up? At 2 get just one of the measles, mumps, or rubella…and…6 months later the next and so on and so forth? I know they give them separately now if you choose to do so. This is what we’ll be doing for Averi. I also came across info about giving high doses of vitamin A(for MMR) & C(for all vaccines) on the day before, of, & after the shot. Just some info you may find useful. If not, then completely ignore me.
September 15, 2008 at 8:55 pm #56664AnonymousInactiveKatie is right. I am so very proud of all of us for being openminded and non judgemental when it comes to vaccines. I will say that our ped did not hesitate to hold off on Cooper’s MMR at 15 months when I was worried about an egg allergy. We got it at 18 months even with the egg allergy but only b/c we “had” to for preschool. He didn’t have any true medical reason not to get it since he didn’t test as having anaphlaxis to egg which would be the only medical reason in our case to not get it. I think my ped would have been okay holding off if he weren’t going into preschool. I think doctors are much more willing to do a delayed vaccine schedule vs a no vaccine schedule from what I have seen. This is such a personal thing and everyone has to do what they feel is best for their child/family in the long run. Cooper’s mom2008-09-15 20:56:33
September 15, 2008 at 11:36 pm #56686AnonymousInactiveWe spread Jedd’s Out per the pedis orders. I still don’t think he is fully caugth up yet at 22 months old…LOL
As far as the flu shot….Jedd got the flu about 4-7 days after gettign his first dose….it was soo frustrating. We have decided that we will get it donw this year nad IF he gets the flu within a week again, NO flu shot for him the following year KWIM?????Also someone mentioned the Flu Mist shot. Again, we are ahving a great conversatino abotu t his but…We won’t do the flu mist over here due to it being a live virsus. I *think*( the child had to be a certain age in order for ANYONE in the house to recieve the Flu Mist shot.If you get the flu Mist shot it is essential making you able to spread the flu. So, hence the reason why they don’t want it used in a house with small children or those immuno surpressed. (sp?)September 16, 2008 at 12:00 am #56688AnonymousInactiveOkay, I am hijacking here. I read the ingredient list for the MMR which Nicholas is supposed to have at 12 months. It has gelatin in it. My ped is not certain whether the gelatin in it is horse or beef based? Anyone? Since he is MSPI, I am nervous about gelatin. Is it okay?
September 16, 2008 at 1:29 pm #56717AnonymousInactiveWhy is he getting his MMR at 12 months? I thought you weren’t supposed to get that one until 15 months?? That was the first time they offered it to us… Just curious. I think the gelatin is fine. I hope someone will chime in about that as well.

September 30, 2008 at 9:16 am #57218AnonymousInactiveOk, I wanted to reopen this post to ask about the flu mist again. A few people mentioned it, but are we certain it is a live virus? Is it safe, not as safe, etc. as the vaccine?
The reason I ask is that our pedi has the flu mist available now, but the shot is not in yet. They will give the mist to any child over the age of 2. So, that’s both of my kids now. Certainly seems like it would be less tramatic for both of them, but I don’t want to risk it if it’s not as safe.September 30, 2008 at 10:23 am #57222hellbenntKeymasterstepping in as a Mod here, I want to say THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I haven’t ‘found’ this thread for THREE PAGES and all of itis CIVIL, informative, etc.Hooray for us!!!I love you guys!!!!There have been times when we HAVE had members w/ an agenda who have NOT been as calm, cool & collected as we are now.So please continue to be mindfulPS: I was going to ask my ped about holding of on the MMR at Ari’s 18 month appt. and when I started to ask, I was told he had already had it at his 12 month! where was I, LOL?? actually I’m relieved bcse it was done and I didn’t have to worry about it anymore. phew!September 30, 2008 at 1:30 pm #57241AnonymousInactiveNaomi,
I forgot to ask this (about live viruses) @ our ped appt last week… I take Brodie in @ 3pm today to get his flu mist. When we asked ped what he rec (flu mist vs. shot) he said flu mist & he had good reasons. Too bad I can’t remember those reasons-lol -sorry. Fwiw though, Brodie never had reflux or any intolerances.I agree that it’s better than a shot, but it will still be hard getting him to be still for the mist. I have to take both boys by myself (usually dh goes w/ me) so dh asked if perhaps they have a straight jacket-lol.September 30, 2008 at 2:34 pm #57250AnonymousInactiveI always thought the mist was a live virus but the shot was not…..
September 30, 2008 at 4:07 pm #57259AnonymousInactiveNaomi, hopefully this helps, it’s from the FluMist official site. It says it is a live virus and lists the “who it should not be given to” and such.
