I hadn’t heard of it being used for ear infections before, but I use xylitol A LOT in baking since Ben and Paige both have sugar issues. I know it’s great for the teeth too. You can substitute it 1:1 for white sugar in baking. I order corn-free xylitol made from birch online, since Ben can’t have corn: http://www.xylitolworks.com/
i use xylitol for sylvia’s teeth. i used to brush her teeth with the drops and i buy kevin the toothpaste and the mouth rinse. i also buy xylitol gum and mints—-but i think i’m going to start skipping the gum—any gum—-at my house. twice recently i have had to get the peanut butter out and rub it in sylvia’s hair to get gum out of her hair.
That’s really interesting that it helps with tooth decay, too. Has anyone seen any side effects? The study lists diarrhea, although with chronic constipation, it might be a good thing for DD.
The diarrhea is possible if xylitol is eaten uncooked (in drinks, etc.). When it is cooked (like in baking) it doesn’t cause diarrhea. When I started first baking with it, we all noticed that we were extra gassy for the first few weeks. Not the painful, uncomfortable kind, just a lot more farting going on! After a few weeks, that seemed to disappear as our bodies grew used to the xylitol.
