Hi, I was just wondering if any bubs have been dx with asthma and if so what were the symptoms.
Alana has a bit of a chronic cough at the moment (pretty sure not related to any reflux) particularly at night and a nurse I know suggested asthma.
Just wondering out loud.
Thanks

It’s true that night time coughing can be a sign of asthma in small children. But it could also be allergies and post nasal drip. I’ve also seen kids have coughs for weeks which were caused by viruses. I had one once as well. Last year when I got over the flu I continued to have a hacking cough for a month.
I think it’s one of those things you just have to watch. How long has she had this cough?
I hope it’s not asthma and that the cough stops soon.
May 10, 2007 at 3:37 pm #32838AnonymousInactiveDoes Alana have reflux? The reason why I ask is because our pediatric GI said that asthma and reflux go hand in hand. I really do hope that Alana does not have asthma. Rylie has asthma…..well really, me, Dylan and Rylie have reactive airway disorder. Our asthma tends to flare up when we are sick. Although with Rylie, her asthma acts up when her reflux does and her reflux acts up when her asthma does. It is a vicious cycle.
Keep us updated, ok?
May 11, 2007 at 6:00 am #32862AnonymousInactiveWell the cough has been around for weeks, who can remember. It seems to be a constant….she is sick and feels lousy she has the cough, she is well and feels great she has the cough. It is usually only nighttime and morning.
My first hypothesis would be post nasal drip but I’m just not sure anymore. Both dh and I have allergies +++, he hayfever, me sinus bigtime, so I guess genetically she could have problems in that department. I had asthma as a child but grew out of it, but do still get a bit of exercise induced asthma (which is my excuse for not hitting my target heart rate).
I think I will just keep an eye on it and maybe just run it by the Dr next time I am there (which will probably be soon given my track record).
I think I am a hypochondriac by proxy
May 25, 2007 at 1:33 pm #34454AnonymousInactiveI am just stumbling onto this post. Therese did you ever figure it out with Alana. Justice is constantly sick too. He gets better for a few weeks an then bam it is back again. Right now he has a seal bark cough in the morning and at night. I have never heard him with that kind of cough before. It seems like his voice is kind of gone too because when he cries it sounds different that usual. Very pitiful. When he talks though it sounds normal. Just curious if you figured anything out. I am also a hypochondriac. I tell my dh it is because I want to catch things before they get bad.
May 26, 2007 at 1:00 am #34523AnonymousInactiveNot really..I’m still wondering. Next time I go to the Dr I will probably bring it up again. They just keep telling me it isn’t uncommon for infants to keep getting virus after virus. I read your other post about the seal bark…I would take another trip to the Dr if its sounds unusual…heck whats one more trip. Alana has been a bit crackly and I have been thinking about another trip myself
June 2, 2007 at 2:49 pm #35385AnonymousInactiveThe ped thinks that Isaac has asthma b/c of his night coughing. Sometimes he will cough off and on for an hour at night. We are trying one last allergy med before exploring the possibility of asthma.
June 3, 2007 at 5:40 am #35426AnonymousInactiveSarah, thats interesting, because thats what Alana does. I really should follow it up properly I think. What allergy meds is he on?
June 3, 2007 at 10:21 pm #35501AnonymousInactiveWe have tried everything I think. He is getting ready to start Allegra but has already tried claritin, zyrtec, singulair, benadryl, and some other over the counter medicines.
June 4, 2007 at 5:16 am #35513AnonymousInactiveWe are doing Dimetapp over the counted and it doesn’t seem to even scratch the surface. They tend to give me that rather than claritin. I’ve been tempted to go to the Dr but I am sure they will just send me away with their “its a virus theory”.
June 4, 2007 at 6:59 am #35516AnonymousInactiveHello ladies!!! I have been MIA, but now I am on summer vacation………..I was reading this post and wanted to let you ladies know about Rylie.
Asthma, allergies and reflux go hand in hand. When Rylie’s allergies start up…………her asthma acts up along with her reflux…..and this goes for each one. What you probably need to do is to see both an pediatric allergist and Pulmologist. Although Rylie’s ped Pulmologist said he would handle the allergy testing for her, so I guess it would depend on your ped Pulmologist. But I think I am still going to have the test results sent to Dylan’s allergist, so that she could handle anything other issues.
I wish you ladies well with dealing with these issues. I completely understand both of your frustrations because I was there and now things have seemed to calm down…..although when fall and winter comes again, I am sure I will be back in the peds offices more. Whatever you ladies do, if you are not satisfied with what the specialists say make sure you keep on pushing until you are satisfied. I learned that the hard way with my son and now with my daughter, I make sure I completely understand what the docs are doing and what I need to do when things flare up. Also, write things down or have the ped do that for you, so when something arises you have it on your frig in writing because you may forget exactly what they said to do…..and believe me you will because I did.
I hope this helps? Please keep me updated with how your kidos are doing.
June 5, 2007 at 6:26 am #35647AnonymousInactiveIts interesting, because Alana is pretty much constantly congested and coughs a bit at night. But I swear she is not refluxing. There are just no signs of it…no acidy smell, no crying, no hearing the reswallow. So I am pretty sure no reflux.
Both hubby and I have allergies so I really think thats what it is. Hubby uses some kind of antihistamine all spring. I’m more of a winter sinus kind of person. We are at the start of winter here and are using the central heating a bit and there is probably heaps of dust about and I’m a bit congested.
