InactiveAlthough we’ve tried rice and oatmeal in the past (unsuccessfully) the allergist said to go forward again (now that Ian’s older) and specifically with rice (oatmeal and barley ok at 10 months) once we had him on some more fiberous fruits and veggies (which we now do-yeah!). Help plump him up a little since weight gain has slowed significantly. So we tried a little rice cereal today with formula alongside his squash and he doesn’t like the taste or more importantly texture at all. He stopped eating immediately after 2 bites-not even his squash. It’s so funny because EI just told us on Friday that at this age reintroducing cereals was going to be tough as he was going to hate the texture even though prior he loved rice and oatmeal.
Any suggestions-really want to stick with it so we can try some finger foods and gets some calories. Should I mix it with juice instead (Ian has bad associations with his Elecare we think from history)…Or just mix a favorite fruit in it? Or will that be tough on belly or hinder him eating it on it’s own? Tough call…
On another note-we are trialing probiotics (again) and it seems really good. Ian was diagnosed with an ear infection Thurs (after many dr visits it finally reared it’s ugly head-ahhh sleep again) and we have to use Amoxocillin which gave him diarrhea for 2 months last time-not to mention much crankiness and no tolerating any solids. So far, a little watery but for the most part mushy poos. He just has added gas (more painful for me really doesn’t seem to bother him) and a little mucous. I think (hope/crossing fingers) probiotics are helping. Just a little ‘good day’ side note.
THANKS!

InactiveHi Tracy,
Sorry about the ear infection. Myles just had one, too.
My girls hated plain cereal. So for them I always mixed in a stage 1 jar of fruit or veggie. They both preferred carrots, or sweet potatoes (sounds weird, especially at breakfast, but they liked it). It doesn’t seem like it would bother his tummy if you were mixing it with a food is already eating.
What I would do is make the cereal first with elecare or juice. Then add the fruit or veggie. I would not add dry cereal to the fruit or veggie…..to me it doesn’t look as tasty that way. So, start with a little bit of cereal so that he is tasting mostly the fruit or veggie at first, then gradually add more cereal as he begins to accept it. I’ve tried this trick with lots of babies when I was a nanny…lots of babies don’t like plain cereal, but most would eat it if it was mixed with something they liked.
About the antibiotic diarrhea…I was often able to prevent it by giving my girls Rice Milk while they were on it. Can Ian have rice milk? Hopefully the probiotics will prevent it but if not, it’s something you might try.
I hope his ear infection clears up quickly and that he begins to eat his cereal.

InactiveAgree with Christine – Marisa NEVER liked plain rice or oatmeal. Still
today she gets oatmeal 2xday but it’s mixed into her fruit in the
morning and into her veggies at night. I make her cereal with
fiberjuice in the morning and mix it with 2-3 ounces of her fruit. At
night I mix her cereal with 1-1.5 ounces Enfamil and mix it with her
veggies.Hope his ears clear up soon and hope the probiotics continue to work for him!

InactiveSuccess! Thanks for the tips ladies. Mixed it with banana (also a miracle food for us digestive wise with antibiotics) and he ate it up. Actually seemed to like the taste even more than plain banana if that even was possible. But then had to give amoxocillin….hope his tummy wont be too disagreeable, but what can you do? It seems like every month it’s something and I keep holding off trying new solids because of it. Really don’t want to get too far behind on that as he’s finally moving forward. And sooooooooo want to get down to 3 bottles-rice will help that!
Ear infections are just awful, aren’t they Christine? He’s on day 3 of antibiotic and just kind of whining alot. Which I almost think is worse then crying as far as grating. But one smile and forget it-heart melts. I’m almost wondering if his new temperment is unrelated to the ear infection and just a “getting older” thing where he just wants what he wants, when he wants. Doesn’t want exersaucer, jumper, pack and play, anything. Just to creep, stand, cruise, get up, get down. All of which I have to supervise. He’s growing physically so fast-he’s just so mobile and active. A good thing absolutely but no rest for the weary. However, sleep has been restored so who’s complaining!

InactiveHi Tracy,
I’m so glad he ate his cereal with bananas. Myles eats his cereal plain; but he’s just plain weird when it comes to food. Hates the bottle….down to one a day and doesn’t really want that one. Won’t eat his cereal if I mix anything it it.
Won’t even put a sippy cup to his mouth. I just don’t get it
but he’s getting plenty of food and growing, so I try not to worry.Oh, and I know what you mean about the age they are at. He is so excited about moving and exploring. He’s just wired and ready to go, but he’s not crawling yet so he just rolls and rolls himself all around the house. He rolls himself into corners, under the couch, you name it! I am forever rescuing him from some precarious situation. And he definitely knows what he wants and doesn’t want and he knows how to let me know. He’s got a high pitched squeal that will have you putting your fingers in your ear for fear of going deaf!

His ear infection fortunately was mild. I was at the doctor for something else and she looked and said he’s got one just beginning so lets start him on something immediately. So, he never was in pain. Just one restless night of whinning and waking. So, we lucked out this time.
I hope Ian is feeling better soon and that he continues to eat cereal and other yummie foods.

InactiveHope Ian is feeling better soon. Glad to hear he liked the cereal with his banana.

InactiveGlad also he liked the cereal banana – M will only eat her cereal if
mixed and I do sometimes think she also likes her food better with the
cereal than plain – maybe they like the thicker texture it makes? Also know what you mean about the constant exploring – all Marisa wants
to do as well is crawl, pull up, try to walk (with us holding her
hands), pull things off our shelves, etc. Fun but definitely exhausting! How are his ears today and is his tummy doing ok with the amoxicillan?

InactiveOk, failure on breakfast of cereal and pears (which I know he likes) gagged on texture and refused from then on in. I’m really also getting the feeling as I have for awhile that he hates that time to eat. He wakes at 6:30, eats bottle at 7am, then we give solids at 8:20(sometimes have to go to work after). He never seems happy about it but would eat. Now that he has the one bite of cereal-forget it. Gags. Also, don’t want to give bananas everytime with rice as both are constipating and with the amoxocillin (which gives Ian major tummy aches), it’s too much.
I’m going to post seperately about schedule ideas-I HATE having to give four bottles – he doesn’t eat them all. But FC is forcing it until on cereal and protein. But I’ll never get on cereal if he doesn’t have time to get hungry. At 8;15 am in the morning after his bottle (which took him 45 min to eat) all he wants to do is play-he’s just angry he has to eat at all. Yesterday he was also eating about 4oz of formula with 4oz of solids right after-seemed to like that better…
Thanks again all. Will start new thread now..

InactiveMarisa’s breakfast is ALWAYS her worst meal. Some days she finishes a
small portion – many days half or less of a small portion. Today barely
anything – and her breakfast is before her bottle so you’d think she’d
be hungry. She tends to do better with lunch and be a pig at dinner (as
long as she’s feeling well) so maybe she just isn’t a big morning
eater… Of course now she’s either getting another bug or just bad
teething (so hard to tell) and not eating much and so tired so we’ll
just roll with it and see.Why are they insisting on four bottles? Doesn’t make sense to me – will
he take almost as much out of three bottles if they are better spaced
and he’s hungrier? And/or will he take sips of formula from a cup with
meals? -
