InactiveWhat is it about food and these little ones??? Henry, at 16 months, has been refusing to eat the past week. I don’t mean that he doesn’t eat anything. I know there’s worse off cases out there than us. He just hasn’t been eating as much as he normally does. He hardly eats any of his breakfast. He eats maybe half of his lunch.
Usually this goes on a day or two, and then he eats a lot to make up for it, but not this time. It’s been going on for a week now.
We did play around with his meds a few weeks ago. God only knows why we even tried, but we cut his prevacid dose in half for about a week. We quickly went back to the full dose. Could this be reaction from that? Could the prevacid be not as effective as before? Or, it could be teething. I’m not sure what teething is like for him. He only has two on the bottom. They came in without symptoms. He seems overly tired as well. I just can’t figure it out.
It’s not that big of a deal to me how he eats or doesn’t eat. It’s just this time it’s a week long along with tiredness and crankiness. You know that cry that we moms know and we are the ones that can just tell they don’t feel good, just by the way they sound. That’s what I’m hearing. I wish they could just tell you what’s wrong. That would be the ultimate.
I have noticed his reflux acting up more lately. I can hear it when I hold him. We all know that sound unfortunately.

When do I really start to worry about him? I do give him pediasure since he isn’t eating. When he doesn’t eat, I wait an hour or two and give him a can of that to make sure he’s at least getting something. He takes that down great. It’s almost like he’d rather drink his calories for the day.
Thanks for listening as I ramble on like a frantic mother who’s losing her cool

You haven’t heard a frantic mother losing her cool until you’ve heard me losing mine!!Sounds like he still needs the Prevacid and maybe it will take a few more days for it to start working again. How long has he been back on the full dose?
The tiredness and crankiness sounds like a possible viral or bacterial infection. Does he have a fever at all? A few times my kids have surprised the heck out of me because I did not notice they were warm and then had them at the doctor and found out they had a fever. In fact, the last time I had Myles at the doctor it was for a blister on his leg, and they checked his temp as they routinely do and he had a fever of 101, and an ear infection. I couldn’t believe it. Boy, did I feel lousy.
Anyway, when my girls have had viral infections they sometimes had no symptoms other than lack of appetite, tiredness and sometimes a fever that comes a goes. For them it usually lasts about a week.
If he does have some sort of infection it wouldn’t be unusual that it is causing more reflux.
Is he laying around all day? Or just needing more sleep than usual? My doctor always says that you should bring them in if they are so lethargic that they are not playing.
I hope he’s feeling better soon.

InactiveToo funny. We’re ALL losing our minds. Where are they all going???
Yes, I had thought of some sort of sickness coming on. When he got croup a month or so ago, he had similar symptoms prior. Yes, he does have a slight fever. I had always heard that happens sometimes with teething though. When he got sick last time, he was still full force energy during the day, so I’m not sure he’s ever lathargic. He’s been taking longer naps though. Like, we have to wake him up after a couple hours. usually it’s no more than an hour and half.
Interesting. I’ll keep an eye on it. Do you take them to the doc for a viral thing? Unfortunately, I’m not sure we rush to the doc unless it’s looking bad to us. Right now, he just isn’t showing any real signs of anything significant.
And so the mystery continues

InactiveYou also have to realize that toddlers know how to self regulate their food intake. You need to look at their intake over a 3-4 day time period. It is quite normal for a toddler to not eat a whole lot for a couple days & then eat ALOT the 3rd or 4th day. Ashtyn used to do this & it drove me nuts.

InactiveI usually call the doc if the fever is very high, or lasts more than 5 days, if they are not drinking enough to stay hydrated, or if they are so lethargic that they are not playing and want to lay around all day. After having three children and intially calling the doctor everytime my first had the slightest ailment, I’ve been “educated” by the doctors and nurses about what they will take seriously and what’s likely a typical viral infection. They can’t do anything about viruses so if you take them in all you get is exposure to more viruses!
Just use your best judgment. You know him best. I hope he’s back to himself soon.
