InactiveI am having a hard time figuring out what this means.
I use DB bottles and lvl 3 nipple. We use Alimentum rtf formula, with a tad of cereal.
Owen was recently switched from zantac 30mg tid to Prevacid 15mg packet once a day. I am in the process of reading this site and MARIC-kids for dosing help etc to call my doctor tomorrow with.
Since he was diagnosed at 4m (now 7m) he has had this odd behavior while drinking. The feeding starts off good, in my arms – he sucks swallows fine. At about 4oz he starts pushing the nipple out, crying, arching his back, and craning his neck backward. He won’t take anymore unless I place him on the floor propped on the boppy pillow – where he will usually finish it.
He was taking 8oz qid, now since the switch to Prevacid only 6oz qid and that is a huge struggle. He is now losing weight. As on 8/8/06 – the day the MD switch the meds he was 21lbs – today he is 18lbs. He takes 2 meals approx 3-4T of veg or fruit or yogurt. My fear is that heis just going to stop drinking. He has no problems with solids.
Someone in my ‘help’ post offered that he might have an aversion to the bottle from the pain
.Is this sandifers syndrome? Or is it just painful feeds? I know he needs more medication and I will try my best to take care of that tomorrow. But even when his Zantac seemed to be at the right dose, he did this odd behavior.
TIA

Inactivewell this behavior isnt really odd to tell you the truth. this is
pretty common behavior with reflux babies. their esophogus hurts from
all the acid that comes up.my thoughts are: PPI’s usually need to be given 2-3 times a day as
babies metabolize them quickly. marci-kids.com explains this under
medications.also your dose may be too low.
and lastly-it takes 2 weeks for ppi to kick in sometimes..
what form of prevacid are you using?

InactiveZoey:
While I tend to think it is probably mostly the reflux causing it, it could also be your baby is doing something similar to what Abby is doing right now. She totally loves the food (bananas, sweet potatoes, cereal, carrots, peas, pears, apples – you name it, she eats it) and I think she really isn’t enjoying the bottle anymore because it doesn’t taste as good as what she is now eating in solids. She will frequently take 2-3 ounces, then push the bottle away. With your baby arching and crying, it probably is reflux but this could contribute as well. A book I was reading tonight also said that at this age, babies become bored with the bottle (who would drink that awful smelling stuff anyway
) I think this post kind of rambled on – sorry about that but it was just stuff I was thinking about when I read your post. Hope things get better soon!!

InactiveTY for replying, glad to know its not odd – though it seems very un-natural to me.
As I said I am going to be calling tomorrow to discuss increasing the dose frequency and sharing the info I have collected from this and MARCI-kids.
I am giving the prevacid packets – he takes it very well though I read you cant divide the does using these – so the solutab will probably be better eh?
I tried to have the zantac as well to use while the prevacid took effect – they told me no. I should have pushed for it knowing what I know now.
So, is this behavior going to disappear when his dose is correct and he isn’t in pain anymore?
TIA

InactiveThanks Robin! I think that could be part of it too. Glad to know hw isn’t the only one being this way. I am so afraid he will just stop taking the bottle completly! I have no idea what I’d do then.
Thank you very much for your reply

InactiveI agree that if he is eating solids and he likes them he may be weaning himself from the bottle. Also the dosage he is on seems low and with our son we give him his zegerid twice daily and he is 17 months old. We have tried once daily but we noticed that he would reflux more. If you can get your doctor to prescribe zegerid that would be the easiest way to go. Solu-tabs have some lactose in them and some babies don’t do well with them. I hope you are able to get your doctors to increase the dosage. I think when you get that dosage right he will quit some of the behavior you are seeing.

InactiveAt 7 months, if he’s losing weight, I would not be comfortable with him weaning himself from the bottle. The behaviour you describe is not odd at all for reflux babies, but it’s not normal. It sounds like he’s in pain to me. With my refluxers they often drank a few ounces before the acid starting backing up and burning them and then they’d quit eating. If getting him to drink 6 ounces is a struggle I really think he needs a higher dose of Prevacid. The weight loss is a big concern. Some babies do gain and grow normally on 6 ounces or even less per feeding, but your little guy is losing. Clearly he needs more food. A baby whose not in pain is going to eat as much as he needs to maintain a normal rate of growth.
Good luck. I hope he gets his meds increased and starts eating better and gaining again very soon.

InactiveWe had split the packets with Dylan and he did very well with them. We had to eye it, but it was close enough to ease his pain.
Have you tried offering formula in a sippy cup? Just to see? It does sound like reflux pain, to me as well, but I would be curious if you offered in a “Big Boy” cup if he would be more interested.

InactiveI think that they say that you shouldn’t split the packets if you are going to give part of the dose and toss the rest. I think that Ann Marie is right. If you eye the packets and split it and then give the rest later in the day, he’ll still get all the meds and be fine.

InactiveWell we went to the pedi today.
After a fight and pulling out the PDR she gave him 15mg twice a day. I mentioned Marci-kids and she got kinda of offended and told me she studies with a pedi.GI. Opps, ah well – I am sorry but I could care less how she feels so long as my son is not hurting.
Also about the bottle troubles. She told me that he is chubby (18pounds at 7m) and he doesn’t need 8oz 4 times a day. I explained that chubby or not he isn’t stopping cause he is full – its cause he HURTS. And he has lost 2 pounds now since 8-8. Idiot!
Also we got a referral to a GI.
Hopefully we are heading in the right direction. Should I give the second dose, 12 hours after the first? When is best – he gets the first at 7am.
Thanks

InactiveSome doctors can be such IDIOTS – they make me so mad (and I don’t get mad often) Hopefully the increased dose will work out. When will the GI appt be?

InactiveGreat news about the Prevacid increase.
And I agree…your’re baby’s comfort is far more important than his doctor’s ego. I hope the increased dose makes him more comfortable. It really turned things around for my little guy.
