InactiveColt has started waking up at 3:00 am and he is wide awake and it takes him forever to go back to sleep. Has anyone else dealt with this and if so how do I get him back to sleep? I think sometimes me getting up and re-covering him up is making things worse. We use air conditioning so I have to cover him up because I am afraid he will get cold. I am tired and really need some advice.

InactiveOK, this one was tough for us with Dylan. 3:30 or 4am was morning for a long time because Dylan would wake up and be done sleeping. Our mistake was going in and getting him. After we figured out he needed more sleep, we did the CIO. I know it is not a choice for a lot of parents for a lot of reasons, but us going in to console him or try to help him back to sleep always did the opposite. Dylan is a child that needed clear boundaries. So, after 3 nights of CIO, it was over.
Periodically after an illness or procedure when the sleep routine is disturbed, then we have to do it again but it is always effective.

InactiveWe could try CIO at this point because I do feel like its becoming a habit. Thanks

InactiveI’m personally not a fan of CIO but if you do decide to go that route, you
may first want to make sure he’s not waking for some other reason. How
much is he napping now during the day and when are his naps? Too much
day sleep (or too little) can cause 3-4am wakeups – so can naps too late in
the day…

InactiveHe takes a 1 to 2 hour nap at 12:00. Most the time its at least an hour and a half. I tried different nap times and lengths but he is still waking up at 3:00. He acts almost like he is playing when he wakes up. So all the advice I can get will be really nice. Thanks

InactiveIt sounds to me like he may be waking because he’s overtired – 1.5hours
may not be enough for him. What time is his bedtime? If he’s cold have you
tried a sleep sack? Does he have a lovey? Could there by any noises from
outside waking him at that time (like a garbage truck, etc)?

InactiveCIO – Matthew had that nasty habit. Only way to handle is what to just let him cry. I was not a big fan of CIO when i was reading the books and then i got a non-sleeper and perspectives change :-). He always cries for a little bit every night… but not too long and usually goes back to sleep

InactiveWe live out in the country so there isn’t anything waking him up. He goes to bed at 7:15. I really don’t think he is overtired because when he is really tired he will take a longer nap. What is a sleep sack?

InactiveA sleep sack is a wearable blanket, basically. It zips up them and is
sleeveless and looks like a potato sack. Keeps them warm and cozy but
can’t be kicked off or smothered under. We used them when Marisa was
smaller but no longer need them – our apartment is pretty warm and we
keep the AC very low and she doesn’t like to be too warm.
Thais – I know what you mean about perspectives changing. That’s why I
don’t judge anyone on this topic. I feel very strongly against CIO even
though Marisa was a terrible sleeper until 6+ months and still wakes early
at least half the time – but I don’t blame anyone else for trying it – I just
try to find alternatives first!
Kathleen – is Colt crying when he wakes? If not can you just leave him
until he goes back to sleep? Marisa seems to go through stages where for
a week or so she’ll wake around 3 or 4am. She usually plays and babbles
to herself for a while and falls back asleep.

InactiveI wish I had some good advice for you. My kids slept with me – they are older now. Emma sleeps with me now also. So if she wakes at night, I just pat her and back to sleep she goes. I have never been a big fan of CIO at all. It’s all personal preference though. You have to do what you feel is right and whatever works for yourself and your child.
I have had friends whose babies did that. I know what they said they tried. Sitting in the room with them with the light on low until they go back to bed, rocking, walking, keeping things as quiet and calm as can be.
Also, like Karen said, is he crying when he wakes up or just hanging out happy? Certainly, if he’s happy, you could just leave him be and see what he does on his own.

InactiveEliana used to wake up in the middle of the night and just sit and stare into space in her dark room for 1/2 hour to an hour and then just lay down and go back to sleep. I found that if I went in and covered her or anything she’d think it was morning and time to get up, but if I let her alone she did much better.
I always had the same dilemna, is she cold, should I cover her? I learned to dress her warm enough and not go in, but it was hard for me to do that at first.
Myles also wakes many nights and babbles to himself or rolls around for while and then goes back to sleep. I’m still struggling a little with the should I go in, should I cover him? thing but I’m finding that he usually does best if I don’t go in as well. For warmth I’ve been dressing him in a long sleeve but thin one piece pajama and then I put a large t-shirt on top. That seems to be the perfect amt of clothing for him in our air conditioned house. (He never stays covered).

InactiveI am having the same problem right now. My baby is 3 months old so it is a little different, but still driving me crazy. It’s not the waking that is bugging me because I get that he needs to wake up to eat. It is not being able to go back to sleep that is driving me crazy. My baby takes 3 naps a day and they usually don’t last anymore than an hour. So, my point is if you figure it out please let me know. I don’t mind the cio thing, but not until they are older. I personally think mine is still too young. Good luck I hope you figure it out. Oh just thought of this, is the sun starting to shine at all at that time where you are? my 2 year old wakes up as soon as it gets light in his room. I know 3 or 4 is too early for the sun here, but maybe not where you are. Just a thought.
