Does anyone know if this is safe for a 2 year old? It doesn’t say anything on the carton, but the chewable lactose enzymes that you take to digest lactose says for 3 years old and up. I am going to the pediatrician today, but just curios what anybody else knows.

Robin – Brian drank lactose free formula before, I introduced lactaid milk when he was about 16 month, and he seems be doing fine with it, but please let me know that what did the ped say.

hi robin! we trialed lactaid milk without a problem when the boys were about 20 months. we’ve now switched to regular organic 2% milk b/c the boys take a lactose enzyme. on the packaging it says ages 3 and up but our ped is the one who suggested we try it. she just has us split the tablet in half. it has totally changed what the boys can eat!

Thanks for your replies, I had so many questions for the pediatrician yesterday, I forgot to ask him about the milk. He is testing his stool for parasites, bacteria, c dif, all the normal stool tests, etc. I was wondering if he could be lactose intolerant, but he wants to rule out these things first. He thought he might have giardia. We’ll see. He has had loose stools on and off for weeks, but no matter if they are loose or solid, they usually are fairly stinky and he has been saying his tummy hurts. The other night he lifted his pj top up and said boo-boo and pointed to his tummy! It breaks my heart. I also wondered if his reflux could be resurfacing. Sharon, I checked the carton of Lactaid milk and it specifically lists lactase enzyme as an ingredient, so the lactose has not been removed. It’s good to know that you have used it. I have been giving it to Brodie a couple ounces here and there and haven’t noticed any problems. LAurie, I may want to discuss the lactose with you further if you don’t mind, once his stool tests have been completed. How did you determine their LI? Tests or just avoidance of it?

robin,

julianna had an endoscopy/colonoscopy last year. when they did the biopsy they determined that she was lactose intolerant. her lactase enzyme level was about an 11 and normal for her age should have been around 30- per the gi. once we eliminated lactose from her diet entirely- even lactose in baked foods, cooked foods ect. we noticed a difference. she no longer complained that her tummy hurt and no longer had explosive bm’s.

basically same for the boys. jack had a sigmoidoscopy/endoscopy at 10 months when he spit up blood again. at that time the biopsy said he was lactose intolerant. we trialed regular milk last september after his allergy testing said that he was not allergic to milk but found that neither jack nor matt could handle regular milk, yogurt, cheese ect. once we switched to lactaid milk their symptoms went away.

i found lots of products- lactose free cheese, milk, ice-cream ect. that the boys had. now though like i said above they are doing great on the enzyme tablet that they take daily and eating regular dairy products.

i’d be happy to talk more to you about this. the gi and our ped has said that it is very unusual to have children this small be truly lactose intolerant, but every time we trial regular their symptoms come back.

Laurie,

Did the boys have loose, foul smelling stools, gas? Did they ever complain that their tummy hurts? That is awesome that the tablets are working. Since Brodie is only one month younger, I am sure he could have them too, if necessary. I will be back to ask you more, once we got the stool results back.

when we found out that the boys are lactose intolerant they were on neocate and no dairy (they were only 10 months). they were reacting to other foods that we were introducing (wheat and soy) – and so we remained dairy, soy and gluten free until they were 18 months old. then when we began to introduce those foods (slowly) after their allergy testing was complete. dairy was last- around 20 months. they had explosive, runny, very foul smelling diapers when we trialed dairy. since removal of lactose, those have resolved and they have no reaction to dairy as long as they have the lactase enzyme. they were young to complain that their belly hurt- they have only become very verbal in the last few months. however when julianna began having problems she was 3 and would grab her belly and double over in pain, crying that her belly hurt.

please let me know when you get brodie’s results back. and i’m happy to share any more information!

I got a little nervous about the lactaid milk today, so I called his ped and asked whether it is safe for him to have it, nurse from the office just called back and said it is ok (she did ask the ped).

Robin,

We did Lactaid milk at the Ped’s suggestion when Hailey was around 18 months or so. She’d been having all sorts of trouble with loose stools. Her stools were tested for everything and she also had a blood test done for celiac – all of which were negative. Her diagnosis was “toddler diarrhea”. It passed after a few months. Let us know what you find out!

Hope all is well! Sorry I haven’t e-mailed you. Things have been crazy here. I was in Germany working for two weeks and then dh has been gone on a business trip before that we had a couple of birthdays so life for us has been insane for the last month or two. He’s coming home tonight and I look forward to life getting back to normal!

Hi Stacey,

I wondered where you had been!!!! I can’t believe you were in Germany and had to leave Hailey for 2 weeks, how did you manage??? Brodie has been having stool issues as you have read. I hope it’s nothing, but when he tells me his tummy hurts, I know something is bothering him. I have been giving him the Lactaid milk with his regular organic milk, (2 oz. Lactaid to 6 oz. regular), and yesterday he had two totally normal solid, non-smelly bm’s. Then this morning it was formed, but quite soft and mushy, but still better than it had been. I won’t hear from the lab until next week and they only tested for parasites, c dif and bacterial stuff, no lactose or anything dietary. We’ll see. Keep in touch, I miss you!!!!!!
