Inactivehi there just wondering what your babies are on! Trace is on the 40 mg packs and he needs the highest marci-kids dose, he is on 42 mg of zegerid! i feel like that is A LOT of medicine!
if he were on the 20 mg packs he would only need 24mgs of meds, according to the marci-kids.com calculator.
do any of you prefer the 20 mg packs over the 40 mg packs?

InactiveWe have only used the 20mg packets. Abby is about 16 pounds, 7 1/2 months old and is taking 5.5ml (11mg) 3 times per day. One thing to remember is that the Marci-kids dosing is only an average dose. Some kids need higher doses to control the reflux, others do just fine on lower doses. Based on what I have read throughout the years, I don’t think it is possible to give too much of a PPI. I guess you find out what works and go with it.
Glad you were able to get Trace back on it since it worked so well before. Hope it goes well again!!

InactiveEven though we’re not using zegerid, I’m just curious about your post. Why is it that using 20mg packets vs. 40mg packets changes the amount of mg of drug (i.e omeprazole) that your child needs. I can understand that if you’re on the 20 vs. the 40mg packets then the total ML of zegerid would change, but the mg of drug per day… shouldn’t that remain the same regardless of which packets you use?
Not sure if it makes you feel better but we recently saw one of the biggest specialists in the city when Hailey had her scope done, and he also assured me that there doesn’t seem to be any effects of doing higher doses even long-term as the meds don’t build up in the system.
Also, I vaguely remember Kathleen posting that Colt used to take 40mg- maybe she’ll reply.

InactiveWe use the 20mg packets and it works out well. Sarah gets 10mg 3x a day so that’s half a packet each dose.
I’ve read several posts about having to add mylanta as an extra buffer to the 40mg packets – making them more inconvenient. Hopefully someone will correct me on this.
I’m so happy Trace is back on Zegerid! Did you print off the coupons?

InactiveLori-i am honestly not sure-thats what the marci-kids website calc. says. i do know that the 40 mg packs have less buffer than the 20 mg packs-maybe thats why. we have to use mylanta or tums as a buffer with the 40 mg packs….
thats good to know about the high doses being safe.

InactiveColt was on 40 mg. for the longest time. We were able to lower it when he was a year old. He had to have a high dose or he was just miserable. He is still on 28mg. now but we have skipped some morning doses and he seems fine. I would do an even 40mg. I don’t think that 2 mgs. is going to hurt him if he doesn’t have it. I know you are buying it by yourself so that would keep you only buying 30 packets in a month. Our doctor has always went by what Dr. Phillips recommended and has never worried about the high dose. I think Colt was around Trace’s age when he was on 40 mg. Don’t worry he will be fine. I hope it starts working really fast for you.

InactiveHey Natalia!
I saw your PM, but thought I’d post here as well. Evan is on 36mgs. We started with the 40mg packets and than switched to the 20’s for one month…. Not good, after a week or so, he wouldn’t take it. I think he had gotten used to the Mylanta taste, so without it, he wouldn’t take it… So today, I picked up more 40’s.
We still gave Evan 36mgs per day even while using the 20mg packets. As an F.Y.I., I think the MARCI-kids calculator is not always right… I questioned Joel when he was still there, and he told me that it had some glitches when calculating the 40 packet doses. If Trace is to be getting 42mgs, he should get 3.5mls per dose if you use the 40s and 7mls per dose if you use the 20s. But as Lori said, the MG’s per day should be the same regardless of what packet you use.
I hope things improve for you, your little man has been through so much….
Take Care!

Inactivesorry i am late responding-
do you guys find it annoying mixing in the myalnta at every dose? i do!
i also have a question-dr phillips is out of the office.
when we started trace on 2.5 ml of zegerid we were using 2.5 ml of mylanta. then, i raised his dose to 3 Ml of zegerid and dr philllips said to keep the mylanta at 2.5 ML.
now trace is on 3.5 ml of zegerid, and i dont know if i should keep the mylanta at 2.5 ml or if i should increase it??also, i hate the fact that the zegerid/mylanta makes a lot of ML, compared to the 3 ML of prevacid/ caracream he was on. he usually takes at least 6 ML total of the zegerid/mylanta, and a lot of the time i cant get him to finish everything in the syringe. i usually stick the syringe in his mouth while he is eating, but a lot of the time he “tricks” me and isnt really hungry, therefore he doesnt finish eveyrhitng.
i have tried givng the medicine by itlsef, but he just spits it out.
ahhh this is annoying!thaks for the info about the calcualtor. i thought it was a little strange that the 20 mg packs said he needed 24 mgs daily, yet the 40 mg packs said he needed 42 mgs daily.

InactiveHey Natalia! You no longer need to use the Mylanta if you are using the 40mg packets and giving 3.5mls per dose (14mgs). We had Evan up t0 3.5mls for awhile and we were told by Dr. Phillips that we no longer needed to buffer. By giving 14mgs per dose there is enough medicine present to be protected by the stomach’s acid.
Good News for baby Trace =))

Inactivemom2evan, why did you decrease? j/w
September 21, 2006 at 5:18 pm #14037Anonymous
InactiveWe thought that he was having breakthrough, so we increased, but we realized he just had a cold, so once he was better we decreased.
Dr. Phillips also once told me that 3ml vs 3.5mls per dose really shouldn’t make a difference, apparently it needs to be a certain percentage of increase to be effective. (i really didn’t understand… and still don’t 🙂
