InactiveMy pediatrician prescibed losec (which is similar to prilosec in America) for my 8 week old son Max. He put him onto 20mg tabs, 1/2 tab twice daily. It seemed to help about 50% so I added in mylanta after every feed. He has been on the meds for about 2.5 weeks. The last 3-4 days he has gone downhill with his reflux and is back at square one.
The doc said if the dosage didn’t help I can go up to 1 tab twice daily. But the Marci-kids website says he should be on 1/2 tab three times daily.
I don’t know which dosage I should do

Inactivemany docs underdose PPI’s. you can already see that the doctor underdosed the first time, as you said it only helped 50%.
i can almost guarantee if you go by the marci-kids dosing, your son will be pain free.good luck.

InactiveAre you using Losec Mups?
If so then Marci-kids and another pharmacist told me that if you break them in half it exposes the granules inside to the air so the second half of the tablet you give doesn’t work !!
We had this problem with the mups, also i found the capsules weren’t much better. We have had to get caracream from marci-kids so i can compound the capsules myself.
My daughter still hates the taste but at least it is working!!

InactiveWait – your doctor is letting you go to 1 tablet, 2x a day right? Go for it – you cannot really overdose on these. Some doctors, like my first GI would overdose because it is hard to give meds to the kids and some is lost.
Good luck

Inactiveso why would the marci-kids web site tell someone they need 1/2 tab 3 times a day if they told someone else that the other half of the tablet won’t work if it is exposed to air???

InactiveChristine I wonder if its like the extra zegerid you mix according to the instructions should be thrown out? But in fact you can keep it in the fridge.

InactiveWell half a tablet would be 10mg and she has the 20mg tablets so having to cut them in half.
But you can get 10mg tablets which you could use the whole thing and not worry about cutting them.
I had the 20mg tablet and was giving 10mg twice a day so having to cut the tablets, I didn’t realise this meant they wouldn’t work as well!
I would recommend you at least get the 10mg tablets!

Inactiveyeah i think marci kids say 30mg, they say that for my daughter too, at the moment she is doing much better on 20mg but we will wait and see how it goes once she gets over her cold and teething issues

InactiveThanks ladies for your help.
I have him on 1 tab twice daily now and today he has been perfect….so far.
We contacted the drug company and they also said that if we were doing half a tab then we needed to dissolve the whole tab, use ony half the fluid and throw out the rest – you were right natalie.
Also they said there is a 10mg tab available – thanks again natalie. I was going to get the ped to prescribe the 10mg tab but I will see how he goes on the full tab.
I am not worried about overdosing him as he does spit a bit up
Also I think the main reason he got bad was that I was crushing the tablets!! Therfore exposing the granules inside and making them useless. Stupid me huh?

InactiveGlad to hear he’s doing better.
Our doctor didn’t tell us the proper way to adminster Prevacid either.
I learned how to do it correctly here. What would we do without this board? -
