InactiveSo, Dr. Phillips emailed me back and said to mix 6.5mL of water with the 40mg packet of Zegerid. He said to mix this in an oral dosing syringe but I don’t have an oral dosing syringe that fits 6.5mL of liquid. Also, is this correct — 6.5mL? He says that adding 6.5mL tap water with 40mg packet will make 40mg in 10mL (4mg/mL). How does that work? Shouldn’t it be 10mL tap water added in to make 4mg/mL? Or is this something way over my head?
Thus, my question is, do you all use an oral dosing syringe to mix it? Or do you mix it in a glass? He says to mix 2.5mL of this with 2.5mL of Mylanta Cherry Supreme. How can you suck up both of them into one syringe so that’s it is mixed? Or do you just give the Mylanta right after you give the Zegerid? I’m so confused with this and I don’t want to mess it up!
Okay, and another question…..I’m giving my son 20mg a day so I’ll have 20mg for the next day since it’s a 40mg packet. Is it okay to refrigerate and use for the next day? I thought I read that I could do this for up to 21 days!

InactiveWhen you mix 6.5mL with the powder it mixes up to 10mL. The volume of the powder adds to the mLs. You can get a dosing syringe at some pharmacies and also at the vets office. We mix ours in a bottle that we got from the pharmacy. They mix liquids meds in them and if you ask most pharmacies will give you one to mix the Zegerid. With the syringe you suck up the amount you need and then clean the outside of it and suck up the Mylanta to the 5mL line and then give that. You can refrigerate it for two weeks.

Oh, you’re talking about the “draw-up” type of syringes. I have the dropper type with the “pressurized” squeeze top so that’s what I was thinking of.
I might have to use the bottle idea instead.
So, can you use 2 different syringes: one to mix all the Zegerid in and one other one to mix the 2.5mL of Zegerid/2.5 mL of Mylanta? If so, how do you get the 2.5mL of Zegerid out of the one syringe and into the other?
I’m confusing myself….sorry if these are dumb questions!

InactiveYou need to add the mylanta at the last minute. I wouldn’t know how to go about mixing the two other than using the syringe to suck up 2.5mLs and then the additional 2.5mLs. Maybe someone will post on if you can give the zegerid and then the mylanta in two different syringes. Oh and by the way no question is a stupid question. Reflux is very confusing in itself. Hope that helps

how many times a day are you giving the 5 ML?Just twice a day; Dr. Phillips recommended 3x a day but Jackson is only on 18mg Prevacid, which works perfectly so I’m only going to give it twice a day for a total of 20mg. I can always icrease it if need be!

[/QUOTE]Really? Wow, interesting!! Well, I guess I can increase if need be but I have to wonder why on earth the dosing is different if it’s the same type of drug, you know? Thanks for letting me know. I really appreciate it.
Anyone else switch from Prevacid to Zegerid and have to increase the dose on Zegerid?

Inactiveits not the same drug. prevacid is Lansoprazole
and zegerid is Omeprazole plus sodium bicarb.October 2, 2006 at 1:12 pm #14733Anonymous
InactiveIf that dosage is working then you should stay with it. I think that the lower the dose you can use is best.

They all work on the parietal cells and try to block the production of acid or so much acid. I have to wonder why you need more of Zegerid when they both are supposed to work the same way. Oh well….we shall try out this dosage of 5mL a day and if it works, all the well!I really appreciate you letting me know about this though. I’ll definitely be vigilant about possibly needing to increase his dosage!

Inactiveyea i think the lower the dose the better too.
and yes these are both ppis but they are different drugs.
Lansoprazole is more powerful than Omeprazole. thats why a few moms on here went from prilosec to prevacid. -
