InactiveAlexandra is doing pretty well overall. She’s on nutramigen and she’s taking zantac and reglan. For the most part she’s a really happy baby. She’s not a great napper, but she sleeps well at night and she’s a thousand times easier than Kaelyn was at this age.
However, I have two concerns and I wanted to see if you all think I’m crazy or not. Even though she seems happier and she is eating better (we’re up to 5 oz per bottle for a total of 25 oz a day), she’s still displaying major sandifer’s symptoms. She arches so much when we’re feeding her that it’s like an acrobatic show. There are also lots of times throughout the day when it seems like she is trying to arch out of our arms.
I’m also still worried about a milk allergy. She has mild eczema all over her body. Her legs are almost entirely covered in dry skin and both arms are pretty scaly as well. Plus, her diapers have been a mess lately. Lately her poopy diapers are more like diarrhea – completely liquid (you would think that the diaper was just wet if not for the color). She’s having 3 or 4 dirty diapers a day. Every couple of days she has a nasty, stringy, mucousy diaper. Am I over reacting, or is this a problem?

Inactiveany time that there is mucus in the stool there is a problem. and the diarrhea is a problem in it’s self. Just think if you had those bowel problems
so they must be bad for her. i would def get it checked out good luck

InactiveThe liquidy poop is probably not normal. And, I definitely would be concerned about the arching during feedings.
Have you considered asking for a PPI for her?
All babies react and behave differently to pain and have different pain thresholds. She sounds uncomortable to me. My two refluxers behaved much differently. Ellie couldn’t sleep, but Myles slept quite well even before meds. Ellie was miserable pretty much all day, but Myles’ misery usually revolved around feeding times. It took me close to 4 months to realize and accept that Myles had reflux….because his symptoms were different from Ellie’s.

InactiveHave you consulted the docs about trying Neocate? It sounds like she is not tolerating the Nutramigen. It may be worth a shot to see if it makes a difference. The arching also would seem to indicate she is in pain. I’d push for a PPI like the others said.
Good luck and please keep us posted!

InactiveYeah, I too would definitely push for a PPI. With my ds (2.5 now) the arching of the back was the major reflux symptom that finally got us on the track for a diagnosis. He had silent reflux so there was never much spit-up to begin with.
Now with my dd, she’s only spit up about 3 times in her life. Overall the reflux is much worse though because even on 15 mg of Prevacid she is still arching her back and crying/ refusing to eat. But just recently we have found that putting cereal in her bottles is making a big difference. Our process is 24 oz of warm water, 12 scoops of formula, 12 – 16 tsp. of cereal and mix in the blender. Things have really leveled off for us just in the last few days and I think this has to be part of it because we were starting to think she needed more meds.

InactiveThanks ladies. I have talked to the ped about options and he has always minimized things in the past. Alex has her 4 month checkup next Monday and I wanted to make sure that I wasn’t crazy before I started pushing harder. I had a checkup with the allergist today (for me, but he’s also Kaelyn’s allergist) and he acknowledged that the mucousy poop is a problem, but wouldn’t say much more. He kept saying that I should talk to her ped. It was almost like he didn’t want to step on his toes.
The last time that I brought up the possibility of a milk allergy with the ped he said that it didn’t really matter because there aren’t any options after nutramigen. So, I guess we have to go in and ask for neocate. Uggh! Dh usually takes them for their appointments since he is off on Mondays, but I have a feeling that I should probably take a half day on Monday and go with him. He hates confrontations, so I’ll have a hard time convincing him to even bring up my concerns, never mind push for a change.
