InactiveI came across an interesting article that I thought I would share.
New study links antacids with increased risk of food allergy
ISLAMABAD: There may be a connection between taking a proton pump inhibitor or an H-2 receptor blocker and developing a food allergy, according to researchers in Austria.
“I think the implications are so important,” said Dr. Erika Jensen-Jarolim, professor of medicine and immunology at the University of Vienna. “Our hypothesis appears to be right in that digestible proteins may act as food allergens when physiological digestion is hampered.”
Dr. Jensen-Jarolim, who presented her study findings here at the World Allergy Congress on Wednesday, said individuals taking antacid medications, which affect acid secretion or neutralize the pH within the stomach, may be setting up a situation where harmless food proteins may turn into potential allergens. Gastric digestion depends on the presence of acid and pepsin, a protein-degrading enzyme activated at high acidic levels. However, elevation of pH levels hinders pepsin secretion, which hampers protein digestion.
The Austrian researchers conducted studies in which they fed mice hazelnut proteins and other typical food allergens. The mice did not develop a food allergy when given these proteins. However, they did develop food allergies in response to these proteins when they were given the proton pump inhibitor omeprazole, or the H-2 receptor blocker ranitidine.
Working with colleagues in Hungary, Dr. Jensen-Jarolim also found that this was the case when they conducted a similar study with 153 patients being treated with acid depression therapy. The data are very new and have not been published yet, Dr. Jensen-Jarolim told. “But it goes well with the animal data.”
In the animal studies, the mice only developed allergic responses specifically directed at the novel protein, but not to components in their daily diet. Dr. Jensen-Jarolim explained that the body builds up a tolerance to foods normally consumed, and so it is only when an entirely new food source is introduced that a problem may occur. She said acid suppression may allow proteins to be introduced that produce an allergic reaction.
“This is the good news,” said Dr. Jensen-Jarolim. “Stick to the diet you know and don’t try exotic foods and don’t make experiments.” She said that an estimated 10% of the adult population is now being treated for dyspeptic disorders and many are taking over-the-counter medications. But she said for those individuals at high risk for food allergies, this may be a problem and they may want to discuss it with their physicians.
“H-2 receptor blockers are now on the store shelves and this may be creating allergy patients,” Dr. Jensen-Jarolim said. “These medications are very important, but doctors may want to tell their patients that there may be this connection and patients shouldn’t eat novel foods that they have never had before.”
It sounds like it could be what is going on with Sebastian. He has not been able to tolerate milk or soy since day one. We started solids at four months and he did great. I was able to introduce 5 foods over about a month and a half with out any reactions at all.
Then at about 5 ½ months he started reacting to every new food I tried. I have not been able to introduce a new food since then without a reaction.
Has anyone else experienced this? Any thoughts?

InactiveHaven’t had any problems like that but the article is very interesting. Thanks so much for sharing Katey!!

InactiveInteresting article. I guess we just can’t win.

InactiveHmmm….
I just don’t know. Myles still doesn’t eat much variety and many foods constipate him. I wonder if the constipation can be a sign of food allergy. He can’t eat pasta, spinach, apples, because they constipate him. I think blueberries do too. He eats the same 6 or 7 foods everyday. I don’t know what to do about it anymore.

I know how frustrating it is when they can only eat a handful of things. I hope it gets better for both of our boys soon.

InactiveI faxed a copy of the article to my ped and asked for his feedback on it. He has been talking about starting to do some tests to see why Sebastian can’t tolerate new foods. I don’t want to put him through a bunch of tests if it is from the meds. What a pain!

InactiveHi Katey,
What kind of tests can they do for him? What kind of reactions does he have when you try new foods? Which foods can he tolerate now?
Is he still doing that head to shoulder thing?
Please let us know what the doc thinks of the article.
I hope Sebastian is doing well, other than his food reactions.

InactiveRight now he is eating bananas, carrots, squash, pears, and oatmeal. He can have rice cereal but it binds him up a bit so I don’t give it to him very often. The reactions he has are, vomiting and/or spitting up, gassiness, fussiness and overall discomfort, and bright green mucusy stools.
So far we have done a blood test for Celiac that was neg. I am not sure what else he will do. He said at his nine month check up that if he does not start tolerating foods we will have to ‘look into what is going on’.
He called me back and said that the article was interesting, but since there has been no research done in the US and he has never heard of a link, he does not think that it would be a reason to stop the prevacid, if it is working for him.
I am going to try cutting back on the meds just to see if he really needs them still. He has been doing pretty well lately so I figured it is worth a try.
I will let you know how it goes.

InactiveWow! That article is very interesting! Thank you so much for posting it. Addy just turned 9 months this week and we haven’t found a single food she can tolerate. We just did a rice cereal trial and she had the EXACT same symptoms as Sebastian. She has reacted this way to every food we have tried. Addy is on Neocate only right now…I wonder if I should try and stop the Zegerid?! I just want for her to be able to eat anything…I feel so sorry for her bc she wants to eat but it makes her miserable when I try new things…we have tried rice cereal, green beans, squash, sweet potatoes, watermelon…all with no luck. If you get anymore info on this, please post again…Thanks! And good luck with Sebastian! addysmommy2006-10-12 16:33:56

InactiveKatey~
Can I ask what website you found this article on? I want to fax it to Addy’s GI but I am sure he will ask me where it came from. Thanks so much!

InactiveGood luck Katey.

InactiveHere is the site I found it at. I was looking when my ped did the celiac test on Sebastain (which was neg) and came across this article.

InactiveLet me know what your doc thinks about it. I gave Sebastian some Peda Care for his cold the last couple days and he is getting mucusy poop from that even. I think he may have even had some blood in his poo last night. It was really runny and full of black flecks. He only had three doses of the med and that is the only new thing he has had all week.

InactiveHey Katey~
I will let you know what the doc says…if he ever calls me back. 🙂
I am actually taking Addy to the doc this morning (pedi bc our allergist and GI doc are 2 hours away) anyway…I am taking her to her pedi bc she had what I believe was blood in her stool this morning too. She’s had it before but I want it documented this time….I feel like sometimes the pedi thinks that I am exagerating everything. We are not getting to see her normal pedi bc she doesn’t come in today but at least it will be in her chart.
I will let you know the outcome but I definitely think you are onto something with this article….there has to be reason for all of this and I am hoping you found it! I am tired of doctors guessing at what she has! Good luck with Sebastian!
