InactiveWell, our dr. wants us to use Neocate instead of the Goats milk.
I know there are many mamas on the board using Neocate – how much does it really cost? I can’t quite seem to get the info on what it would cost per day, assuming your babe takes 28 oz per day. Also what about taste? And does it come in a ready to feed? All I see on the website is powdered!!!
I am conflicted about which to use as the goat’s milk has no fillers or chemicals and it is organic. However, we would be totally assured with the neocate that she is getting full nutrition… as well as no animal protein…
I’m so confused!!!! Thanks for any info or for sharing your experience with the neocate. I just dont know what to think. All I know is DD is still doing fantastic on the goat…..

InactiveWe actually just saw our Peds GI yesterday and I told him that I have Taylor on Goats milk and he wasn’t upset about it. He said it actually works very well on some children with severe allergies he just wants to make sure that she was getting all the vitamins that she needed since he said goats milk lacks carbs, folic acid, and iron. I told him we are using the Meyenberg brand which is fortified with folic acid, adding rice syrup for the carbs and giving her a multi-vitamin with iron and he actually seemed very pleased with that. I think the reason why it is okay with him is that we did try the Neocate route first but it didn’t work out since she is allergiec to corn syrup which is a big ingredient in Neocate. In regards to the neocate it does not come in a ready to feed only powder it runs about 28-34 dollars a container which for us would last around 3 days when she was taking around 24oz a day if I remember correctly. The mixing instructions are different from other formulas which is 1 scoop to 2 oz of water the neocate is 8 little scoopers to 7 oz of water to make 8 oz of formula all in all 1 container makes approximately 84 oz of formula. In regards to the taste, it tastes horrible and it is very thin so we had to thicken it with Simply thick. You can check with your insurance since some of them do consider it a medication and will reimburse a portion of the price. You also can buy it on e-bay which might seem odd but we actually did, we made sure it came in the factory box with the SHS tape still on it. I read your post about rice milk formula, do you actually have a reciepe for it? If so I would love to get it from you! Hope everything works out for you!

InactiveThanks so much for the info.
I think our ped. gi would be ok with the goat’s milk if he would fully understand that DD is getting all her vitamins… Actually, he said he is ok with it for now just to get her “stabilized”.
my DD is allergic to many of the chemicals in formula anyway so I’m not sure that neocate is our answer….
My gut instict is to stick with what we are doing. We know it works, it is financially feasible and she looooves the taste!
oh, and yes, I do have a recipe for the rice milk formula I’ll look for it and post it. I think it contains coconut milk for fat/carbs and added vitamins.
Also, part of DD’s problem is underdeveloped tounge and jaw muscles which is why we had all those gagging/swallowing issues. Chiropractic adjustments have *really* helped with that.
I think for now we just may stay with the goats milk…if it aint broke, dont’ fix it right? But other mama’s are having good results with the neocate… AAHHH! I’m getting confused again!!!

InactiveValerie,
It tastes as horrible as it smells! Our Ped GI had us add a packet of Splenda to each bottle for a few weeks to get Hunter to adjust from Carnation Goodstart.
We find that he goes through a can every 3 days, and it runs about $45 a can. However, we went through a company called APRIA (they is a Medical Equipment Supply Co). They have a nutrition dept that filed everything with our insurance company, and actually got them to approve it, when the doctors office continuously got denials. They deliver it straight to our door, and will continue to do so until Hunter grows out of the MSPI (according to his doctors). I called APRIA, and they called our Ped GI to get the Neocate script faxed oer to them. They are wonderful! I found the number on this website by doing a search on APRIA.
I am sorry you are having mixed signals about the goats milk. I wish for once all of our doctors could agree on something. Go with your gut, though, you’re the Mommy!

Good luck to you, and if you need anymore Neocate info, let me know.

InactiveI agree with the if it’s not broke don’t fix it! I do have 2 containers left of Neocate from Taylor’s trial but the only thing is it expires 10/06. I believe you still can use it up to 6 months pass expiration if you are want to give it a trial I’ll mail it to you just private message me you address and I will gladly send them out to you! Thank you for looking up the rice milk reciepe! I can’t wait to see what we need for it Thank goodness for living next to a Whole Foods!

Inactivemy son never minded neocate taste because i mixed it gradually with alimentum. also, his reflux issues went away completely after just a few bottles of neocate. and lastly, no more crying after feeds!! i dont know where we would be without it.

InactiveIt didn’t matter how slowly we tried to mix them in. Hailey couldn’t stand even the smell of the hypo formulas. The slightest whiff and she would be gagging- and I mean the tiniest drop into a 4 ounce bottle. Then I tasted it myself and understood why. I always wished that I could have gotten her to take one of them because I suspect it would have probably really helped her. Good luck whatever you decide. Follow your mommy-radar… it’s usually right on.

InactiveWe just switched our son to goat’s milk after being on Alimentum. We have tried Similac, Isomil also. I really wish I had gone with my gut feeling and used the goat’s milk when he was 8 weeks old. Most of our feeding problems began when we introduced Alimentum and Prevacid. I can’t say which was the cause, but I am leaning toward the Alimentum. We have never gotten him to take more than 3 – 4 oz. at a time. He is clearly not in any pain, he just doesn’t like the taste. I would stick with the goat’s milk for as long as it worked before switching to an extremely expensive formula. Just my opinon though! Good luck, and I am so glad that your baby is doing well.

Inactivefirst of all = here is the rice milk recipe from the UC Berkley Parents Network:
While this may not exactly fit your requirements, this was developed by one of my teachers. Essential fatty acids from flax are fine, but the cod liver oil provides vitamins A and D, the latter critical in the allocation and utilization of calcium. Whey powder is highly digestible, especially a low-heat process version like Solgar.
Ed’s baby formula (adjust with age- this is for around a 1 year old)
Make a congee with 1 cup short brown or basmati rice and 6 cups pure water. A
congee is cooked over low temperature for 6-8 hours (crockpots are great for
this) until like a thin gruel.
Strain. Store in refrigerator. To each 8-10 oz amount, add:
1/2 tsp cod liver oil (can use emulsified but try straight, unflavored first)
1/2 tsp flax oil (high lignan is probably OK)
1 tsp whey powder (goat is good)- if child is growing, increase for protein
1/3 tsp green powder (a gluten-free version is best)
1/4 tsp buffered vitamin C complex powder
1/4 tsp acidophilus/bifidus powder
Heat in water bath to lukewarm temperature and feed. This offers a complete
macronutrient complement and most significant micronutrients (vitamins A, B, C,
D, E, K, P for sure).
Nori
As for what to use I am conflicted. All I know, for now, is that this is what is working for us:
1. Goats Milk formula from the Dr. Sears website for MSPI
2. Prevacid 1.5ML 3 x’s per day for silent reflux
3. Mylanta as needed
4. Chiropractic adjustments for underdeveloped jaw and tounge muscles.
I am such a bad mama….I stopped the prevacid after almost 2 perfect weeks on goat’s milk hoping that her problems were only MSPI… horrible episode tonight so now I know. Bsck on the prevacid we go.
So, for now I am going to let Rachael be my guide and if that is what is working for her then so be it. My only concern now is that if the reflux is still an issue and so horrible maybe she needs the neocate to help her heal internally. However, if it smells bad and tastes bad I think we are better off with the goat for a while.
Tonight I am just so down…but I shouldn’t be. I need to think on the positive and be ever so grateful that at least SOMETHING is working.
thanks for listening tonight! I’ll keep you posted.
