Inactivequickly, DS is SCREAMING in my ear…
Got put on prevacid solutabs on last monday, have been dissoliving the 15 mg in a tiny amount of water and giving before he eats, not waiting 30 mins like the granules says, b/c it doesnt give that in the directions? Should I be waiting to feed?
Also, hes on alimentum now, but still really cranky….Any other suggestions?

InactiveBest to give on an empty stomach (2-3 hours after a meal) followed with a meal 30 minutes later. The meal actually activates the med, so it’s apparently most effective when given that way. Good luck.

InactiveYes, it does matter. More of the medicine will absorb if it is given on an empty stomach, and waiting the 30 minutes is important because once the medication is in the bloodstream the full meal is needed to activate the drug.
Is he only getting one dose per day? That may work for him, but most babies seem to need at least two doses and three is even better.

InactiveIf its not working to wait in the morning before morning feeds, can I give to him before the next feed which is usually around 10am? b/c he never really goes more than a couple hours inbetween eating…
Doc suggested splitting tab into two parts, giving one in morning and one in evening… will this help?? how long before I should see a difference w/ this med… the internest says around 2 weeks to take full effect, have been giving zantac around noon to help when hes really acidy spit up.
Schedule goes like this most days.
6 am- 15mg pill of prevacid solutab, followed by 4 oz alimentum
930 ish-4 0z alimentum
12-4 oz alimentum, .6 zantac if needed
230 pm- 4 oz alimentum
4pm-4 oz alimentum
7pm-4 oz alimentum
1030- 4 oz alimentum
330 alimentum
6am alimentum
Does it sound like hes eating too much? The rice cereal was constipating him when he was on Enfamil Lactose free, but now that hes on Alimentum, hes started to go on his own, should I try oatmeal with this formula instead of the rice? do I need to put it in EVERY bottle, or just a couple times a day???
I really appreciate all you mama’s, it really is a INVALUABLE forum!

InactiveYes, you can give it before his second feeding. If he eats at 6:00 you can give it to him at 9am and then feed him at 9:30. That should work well. I do think two doses would be better than one. Maybe give the other dose at 6:30 pm before his 7 pm feeding.
All babies are different in how much they need, so I wouldn’t worry about how much he’s eating; just whether he’s comfortable or not.
Thickening is controversial. Some say it helps keep things down. Does he throw up/spit up alot? Some (like me) use it because their babies choke on thinner feeds. Some use it because of slow weight gain, and some say it helps keep acid down and reduce pain. It’s really trial and error. I personally wouldn’t thicken unless absolutely necessary because it often causes more problems, like gas, and consipation.
Also, keep in mind that many of us have found that our babies need higher doses than most doctors are comfortable prescribing. If you don’t see improvement in two weeks time he may need a higher dose.
I know it’s a lot to take in and very frustrating.
I hope things improve soon.October 17, 2006 at 1:55 pm #15888Anonymous
InactiveI can’t really add much to what Christine said other than I think you need to follow a similar rule with the Zantac in that you give it and then wait 30 minutes before a feeding. I could be wrong but I though I read that as well as not to give it at the same time as with the Prevacid (you’re doing that part right).
It’s so frustrating… I’m going through the waiting to take effect period too and it’s so easy to resign to the fact that it isn’t working when you just want releif for your baby. How old is he?

Inactivek, Well we now have a appt with a GI doc, so we’ll see what he says, and I dont think Im gonna thicken his milk, b/c he normally doesnt spit up that much if at all anymore, just today is rough for him for some reason…
