InactiveFor the last several weeks we have not introduced any foods because Trevor was doing so poorly on them. In the past when we gave him a good break he would always go back to sleeping through the night. This time however, he still got up maybe twice a night for just a minute or two. I thought this was odd because he would go right back to sleep if we opened his door & left a light on across the hall in the bathroom. He even slept all night when I left his door opened with the light on.
The last 3 nights I closed his door & left his night light on in the bedroom and he slept all night long without a peep.(we close his door because his brothers room is right next to his & I don’t need them both up)
I think this is a bad idea because we are starting another bad habit with him. My dh thinks it is great so he can get a good night sleep!
Has anyone else had this problem? Do you think it is a bad idea to start this? How do you ever get him to go to sleep without a light? This was never an issue with him before?

Thanks everyone

InactiveI guess we have always used a night lite with both of our girls. I guess I really don’t like total darkness either so I keep a small light on in the hallway (for me) as well as a very, very dim lite in the girls room. My thought is, if it makes him sleep better, it shouldn’t be a problem.
Glad he is sleeping so you can get good sleep too ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

InactiveMyles still sleeps in the dark, but both of my girls slept in the dark until a certain age when they began to be afraid. I read that it’s a developmental thing…
We put a small 15 watt bulb in our hall light and leave their door open a little and that solved the problem for them.
I don’t think there’s any way around it. I think most kids are afraid of the dark and very few sleep in complete darkness.

InactiveMy oldest has always & still does sleep in the dark with no problem. I just thought that most kids did sleep in the dark. I didn’t want to start a whole new set of problems if I continued doing it. (I already have enough).

InactiveI don’t know what i would do without a night light. I have had them my whole life, and my whole entire family, cousins and all use night lights throughout there house. I just prefer to be able to wake up and see my surrondings. Personally I don’t think it has ever caused a problem for any of us, we just think of it as a way of life, personal preference, not b/c we are scared. It might make him feel more peaceful or safer and like Christine said, I don’t know a whole lot of children that are not afraid of the dark.

InactiveI guess that is why I was suprised when he did better with the light on. We have never used night lights in our family & I though I would be opening a whole new set of problems.
I’m glad that I asked the question!

Inactivei’ve never considered a night light to be a problem. when i was little i liked to be able to see a little light and hear people milling around the house—-it was comforting to me.

InactiveIf it’s helping him sleep, I’d go for it. Even if he becomes dependent on it, it’s really a fairly minor issue. If you’re really worried, you can look for one of the ones that’s really dim. Kaelyn always had a night light in her room, but when we switched her to her “big girl” room, we forgot to move it, and she’s been doing fine without it. Of course, several years ago, my apartment was broken into while we were sleeping and the police said that you should always leave at least one light on at night. I took that to heart and we leave lights on in two different rooms of our house. We have a tri-level, so some light from the living room gets into her room under the door. Maybe that’s enough.
