InactiveWe moved to Texas and saw a new dr. He convinced my husband to try out prevacid. He said Aiyana’s reflux should be gone by now (she’s 16 months) and we needed to medicate her so her esophagus doesn’t get damaged. He also said that is why she is under weight, she weighs 20 lbs and is 30 in.
I have always been against medication, because I thought she was too young, these medicines aren’t made for babies. What about side effects, etc. That’s why I tried to keep the reflux in control by using the elimination diet for us both since I m still b/fing.
But, since the reflux hasn’t gone away and seemed worse, I gave in. Aiyana is taking prevacid 2 times a day 15 mg total. It’s been almost two weeks. She still gulps though, maybe not as bad. So my questions is this: Is the gulping/ symptoms supposed to stop with this medicine? Does this medicine protect her esophagus? Does it coat it in any way? If she still gulps that means the acid still comes up, so how is the medicine beneficial?
On the up side we are now eating wheat, soy, and egg!!! The only thing we are still eliminating is dairy.

prevacid works by shutting off the acid pumps in the stomach. therefore no acid comes up to destroy the esophogus.
ppi’s are very safe, with virtually no side effects. they only work on the cells that create acid pumps. its a shame that she had to wait 16 months to be medicated.

gulping does not mean there is acid coming up? my son gulps sometimes and there is no acid because he is on a high dose of zegerid.
you should really check out marci-kids.com. They discuss PPI treatment in infants.
good luck 🙂[/QUOTE]

InactiveThe other reason he prescribed the medicine is because of her gulping. That is the only symptom of reflux that she has at this point. She usually gulps at night when she is asleep, and hardly ever during the day.
My dd never was in any pain from her reflux. If she had been screaming every day or was obviously in pain, then I would have medicated her sooner. She has always been a happy baby.

Inactivehmmmm…okay i gotcha, i thouhgt she was in pain. ….
i didnt realize they gave PPI’s if the only symtpom is gulping. strange. sometimes that can be solved just by changing the nipple to a slower flow or something like that.
if she is happy and not in pain with eating, (this is my personal opinion then….) im not so sure that i would medicate. -
