InactiveHello Everyone,
Now that we’ve finally got our eating issues solved, our next battleground is sleep. Gabby is finally eating around 18 – 22 oz a day, which is a little on the low end but she’s gaining. She also is sucking down her bottles and eating 3 – 4 oz at a time, when she was only taking 2ish just two weeks ago. There is also not pain with eating. Hooray.
Gabby ends up sleeping around 11pm and I know that’s late, but she tends to cluster feed at night. She’ll sleep til 3:30 and that’s almost every night. She eats anywhere from 1 to 4 oz and passes back out. Most of the time I can get a burp out but sometimes she is so passed out that i’m not sure or I just can’t get her to. I do the holding her upright over my shoulder thing for a half hour and then lay her down in our bed. We’ve been co-sleeping after her night feedings because otherwise I’d make 70 trips back to her between 4 and 8. She’s put back down around 4 or 4:15 and sleeps til 5 or 5:30 at the very latest. Then she’s rolling around, sucking on her hands and looking for her pacifier, and at this point she is horribly congested. I don’t know if it’s the congestion, reflux pain. or her just being a horrible sleeper.
Any advice? Thoughts? I could really use some sleep.

InactiveHave you tried saline drops for her nose? I think it’s really hard for babies to sleep well when they are congested.
Was she sleeping better previously?

InactiveShe has never been a good sleeper, except for the first three weeks when she was jaundiced. I always chalked it up to her being breastfed and young. But now she’s on formula and 3 months is supposed to be that magical time when they can sleep longer. I once got a 12-6 stretch but that’s when we were doing cereal in every bottle. I don’t think she slept as fitfully though. The congestion is a new thing. I know reflux gets worse as four months is nearer. She doesn’t appear to be in pain, but probably is uncomfortable due to the food coming up.

InactiveActually from what I’ve read it (sleeping through the night) may have more to do with weight than age. Also, it has a lot to do with sleep training, and temperment. Some babies are better at self soothing than others. In any case, it’s much more difficult with a reflux baby because of their discomfort. Like you mentioned, even when (thankfully) their pain is resolved with meds, it’s probably still uncomfortable to have food coming back up. Do you have her mattress elevated? Have you tried white noise in her room?
Can you try cereal in her last feeding, or did the cereal make things worse for her?
I hope she starts sleeping better soon. I sure know how hard it is.

InactiveHi
Alana was a terrible sleeper until she was about 15 weeks old- I am not sure there is anything magical about three months! In the last week she has started sleeping for 8 hours overnight. I think it is just very individual for every baby. They get to the point they can manage without the food. I also changed my routine by feeding her everytime she wants it during the day- sometimes every two hours. Then she gets all the feed she needs during the day (you can calculate how much formula they need by their weight)
The formula is 150 x weight divdied by the number of feeds-
eg a child who is six kilos and having 5 feeds needs 150 x 6 / 5 = 180 or so at each feed.
I find if Alana gets all her feed during the day she is more likely to sleep at night. This might be difficult if your babe isn’t taking much during the day and that might be why she is going to have difficulty sleeping long periods at night.
Of course it is wonderful when they sleep for longer and it helps so much in managing when you’re not tired!
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if they could find some way to keep those dummies in until the babe can pick it up and put it back in themselves!! Anyone who can invent something will make a fortune.

InactiveSorry, I was talking in mls- we don’t do ounces here in Aus. I think each ounce is worth around 30-32 mls. Most bottles have both on them I think.

InactiveHave you tried using a humidifier? My DD has the same problem with congestion due to reflux and having a humidifier on every night really seems to help. Also, we use the saline drops before she goes to bed. She absolutely hates them, but they help her breath better and sleep longer.
Good luck!
