Inactivealright so we just started adding goodstart to shanes alimentum bottles on monday.. everything seems to be going ok, except for one: he is spitting up more, which i was wondering maybe its because its thinner..but we are doing the RTF (he is only getting 2 or 3 ounces of it with 5 or 6 ounces of alimentum) and 2: he seems to not really want it. he doesnt seem in pain, but hasnt wanted it much.. and that has never been like him, he always has 7 or 8 ounces… soo is it possible its because it tastes different??
if he wasnt tolerating it would i know by now? and how would i know?

Inactiveit can take a while for the milk proteins to build up in his system, but its my understanding that goodstart has broken down proteins just like alimentum does, only goodstart uses whey protein instead of casein.
reflux will usually be aggrivated by a formula they cant tolerate.November 17, 2006 at 10:17 am #18227Anonymous
InactiveI’ve read here that it can take two weeks (maybe longer) for the proteins to build up enough to cause a reaction. You might be seeing early signs now, but it’s hard to say.
Myles did not like the taste of the Good Start initially. But since he was only getting one formula bottle per day (breast milk to rest of his feedings) I wasn’t too concerned, but I remember that for the first week or two he would drink less of that night time formula bottle once I started adding the Good Start. Eventually he got used to it and drinks it fine now.
I don’t know if that helps or not. I guess I’d just take it slow and if it gets any worse over the next few days, maybe stop the Good Start for a while and see how he does. He’s pretty young and if he is MSPI, I don’t think he would have outgrown it yet.

Inactiveyep, i am not sure if he is mspi, i never really had any reason to think so. but i have kept him on the alimentum only because he can digest it better, and because the RTF is the thickest…. we just cant afford it if he isnt.. i guess i am hoping that now he can digest the goodstart fine….

InactiveI know what you mean….baby formula is so darn expensive and when you have to use the specialty formulas it’s unreal how much you have to pay for them.
Maybe it’s just a taste issue with him. Myles definitely hated the good start for the first few weeks. I had to introduce it very gradually mixed into his breat milk or soy formula until he eventually got used to the taste.

Inactivewhen you recommend gradually, what does that suggest? I, too, am looking to make a transition from neocate to good start, but want to do it so slow. anyone have any recommendations on how much per bottle/ per day/ per week??

InactiveWe went from Neocate to Goodstart when Colt was almost a year old. At first we added two ounces of Goodstart and 4 ounces of Neocate. We did that for 2 weeks. Then we did 4 ounces of Goodstart and 2 of Neocate. Also Colt didn’t do so good on the Goodstart with DHA/ARA. He has done great on just plain old Goodstart.

InactiveLauren – How did your appointment go on Thursday? Not sure if I missed a post about it…but I was just curious.
I, too, would say to keep adding the good start. It is a big taste adjustment and he’ll probably get used to it eventually. I know switching to Alimentum seemed to take FOREVER b/c the stuff was sooo gross. I think on day 5 or 6 we were finally at full alimentum bottles but it took a lot of refusal to get to that point. Don’t give up! If his only symptom right now is ‘not liking it’ and there aren’t any rashes, diarrhea, etc…then keep trying to add it in.

Good luck!

Inactivehey amy,
it went well.. he wants to give him some herbs (fennel, catnip, nettle, licorice) and make it into a tea.. he also wants to keep him on alimentum for the time being. he thinks he is still might be intolerant to milk, and just wants to be safe and address the reflux w/o any other milk problems. we put together that he stopped crying and his cradlecap and acne went away around the time he got off milk based.. and it prob wasnt the meds helping as much as i thought because he is the same on and off them. we are on the powder alimentum now just to save money and he is doing o.k. seems more watery spit up now
anyhow he really is doing well, we havnt started any of the teas yet, because i am still reseaching and unsure if i want to. but he has been sleeping soo much better and taking longer naps and still not extra cranky.. soo praise God, i think we got over the hump… reflux still exists, but i think we might have a happy spitter now 🙂well, thats it up to now.. i hope sarah is still doing well…. and thanks everyone else for your advice.

InactiveSo glad to hear things are improving Lauren. Seems like both our babes might need their special “MILK”.

InactiveLauren,
So glad to hear that Shane is doing better.
I don’t know anything about formulas and all, but I sure am jealous that your little one is taking good naps and sleeping better now! Hopefully, we will get there some day too!
