InactiveSometimes I feel like I am losing my mind.

I’ve been worried about Alexandra off and on ever since she was born. She still has a slight rash/dry skin all over her legs and she hasn’t had a solid poop in weeks (actually, it’s been months). She is also fighting, arching, turning her head on almost every bottle. You can eventually get her to take almost the whole bottle, so she’s getting about 24 oz a day, but feeding her isn’t pretty. Other than this, she is really a happy, laid back baby (the exact opposite of Kaelyn as a baby!) Last week, she started being really fussy every evening. I called the ped and they upped her zantac. Fussiness went away, but the bottle issue remains. The ped insists that it couldn’t be due to the milk in nutramigen. Am I crazy to think that I should just go ahead and try neocate on my own? Then, if it doesn’t help, I can quietly go back to nutramigen. If it does, I can try to get the ped to write a prescription so I can hope for help from insurance.
Okay, I’m glad that I got that off my chest. My bigger issue right now is Kaelyn. She’s been having nightwakings for weeks. They’ve gotten worse over the last two weeks. I thought that they might be night terrors, but now we really think that it’s reflux related. If you give her mylanta or tums when she wakes up, she calms down and goes right back to sleep. She has also complained about her tummy hurting during the day and she refuses to nap at day care (making for a very cranky toddler). So, we tried nightly doses of mylanta before bed. It didn’t work so the ped prescribed zantac efferdose. Only problem is…she refuses to take it. She says it’s yucky and spits it back out. I’ve started hiding it in a drinkable yogurt, which works, but does that decrease the effectiveness of the medicine?

InactiveOh, my. You sure have your hands full. I’m sorry both girls are still struggling with this lousy reflux. I think in your position I’d fight tooth and nail for a PPI for both of them. Zantac just isn’t as effective as PPI meds.
I’m sorry I don’t have any other adive. I hope things get better soon.

InactiveI think I would fight for the PPPI too…it isn’t going to hurt and has a huge potential to help. 🙂 I do know that putting the Zantac in the yogurt or whatever should be fine. A friend of mine whos child has reflux puts her medicine in the child’s formula…and my GI said that it didn’t matter when you give the Zantac…in fact, when we started Brianna on this reflux med roller coaster, my Dr. recommended to give the zantac on a full stomach as the taste of it can be somewhat harsh….Good Luck!

InactiveHi Kim,
I am so sorry about your issues with Alexanda and Kaelyn. I have alwasy read your postings since Brodie and Kaelyn are very close in age. Brodie has been complaining off and on since Aug, that his tummy hurts, sometimes it’s while he’s eating, other times it could while he’s watching a movie or playing. It is very distressing and upsetting. I finally got an appt. with his ped. gi dr. but not until 12/15. I am thinking he may be refluxing again too. I hear him swallowing a lot when he goes to sleep which tells me the food might be backing up his throat and frequently when he wakes up in the morning or from a nap, he says his tummy hurts!
I have yet to try mylanta or tums, because he still is very sensitive to different tastes and textures, I’ll never forget when he threw up from a Flintstones vitamin a few months ago!!! Anyhow, I would get the neocate for Alexandra and try it. You don’t want to end up at a worse point like possibly having to sleep feed because of a bottle aversion and like you said, if you notice no difference after several weeks, go back to Nutramigen, no one has to know. I ordered some off Ebay, because Brodie’s ped. gi would only give it if we did an endoscopy and it showed he needed to be on it. I refused and ordered it myself, but right before I tried it, he turned the corner and did pretty well on Alimentum RTF, so I sold it back on ebay. The only thing that made me nervous was timing, because you can’t just go pick up Neocate in a grocery store or drugstore as you know, so if you do go ahead with it, make sure you get enough. I believe it is mixed 1 scoop per 1 oz. of water, so a can doesn’t make much. For Kaelyn, push for her Prevacid again, I think that is what I am going to do, if the dr. feels it is his reflux.!!! Good luck!

InactiveIf your instinct tells you to try the Neocate it can’t hurt. At first I thought you had to have a script to purchase it & then I got scared because it says to use under medical supervision. I was at the end of my ropes when I got a hold of a can of Elecare. I was scared because I thought how am I going to tell the Dr. I did this on my own. I told the dr it helped a little & thankfully he said many babies do better on Neocate & gave us a few cans of Neocate to try.
If I had it to do over again my son would have been on it many, many months before he did. It can take a while for it to work but if you don’t see a change then you can always sell it. At least you will have a piece of mind that you tried it.
Good Luck!

InactiveThanks for all of your input. I really just needed someone to tell me that it did sound like reflux or allergy symptoms and that I wasn’t crazy!
I figure that we are heading towards a PPI for both of them. I just want to try every possibility first because I know that the ped is going to want to do solutabs. I loved solutabs when Kaelyn was on them (and we actually have almost a month supply left over from when she was on them). However, her allergy symptoms didn’t totally clear up until we stopped the solutabs. I’m assuming it’s due to the lactose in them and her milk allergy. The ped insists that couldn’t be the case. That’s why I definitely want to try neocate with Alex before trying for a PPI. If her symptoms clear up on neocate, then I know that it’s worth fighting for something other than solutabs.

Inactivejust a thought with the bottle issue.. my son is the same age..and has been doing that recently… he is otherwise pretty good and happy throughout the day.
could she possibly be teething? i think that is why he is doing it. the reflux seems undercontrol. sooo maybe she is teething as well? i heard it hurts their gums when the bottle rubs on it….?

InactiveThats an interesting thought re the bottles and teething- Alana has also been fighting the bottle a bit the last couple of days…and her reflux is now pretty well controlled- but she has been bothered by her gums. Occassional she stops drinking and tries to chew the bottle with her back gums where she seems most bothered. Then last night she went fine- after some teething gel earlier that day!

InactiveInteresting idea. She’s been fighting the bottle for weeks, so I doubt that ‘s the problem, but it’s worth looking into.

InactiveSo sorry that you’re still dealing with reflux! I hate it. Hope that there’s a simple answer. If she’ll take solutabs maybe that will help. Good luck.
